מעלתא f. pl. (עלל) incmme. Pesik. R. s. 31 (emend. in ed. rr.) נפקתא מני ולא מ׳ מני בישא שיבבא a bad neigh- bor counts (his neighbor's) income but not (his) expenses.
מעמד m. (b. h.; עמד) 1) standing up; ומושב מ׳ stand- ing up and sitting down, halt of the funeral escort on re- turning from burial for lamentation or consolation. Tosef. Pes. II (III), 15 וכ׳ ומו׳ מ׳ אין no less than seven halts are made. Ib. 14 ומו׳ מ׳ לעשות שנהגו מקום where it is custom-- ary to make halts (on the eve of Passover). B. Bath. 100b מ׳ומו׳ עבדלהarranged for her ake amaf fmadac. Meg. IV, 3 (23b) מעשרה בפחות. . אאיןעושיןמ׳we arrange no maetmmad &c. with less than ten persons; a. fr. -B. XIII, 36a bot. במעמדה בשפסק when her father made the promise in her presence; a. fr. -- 3) post, a division of popular representatives deputed to accommmpany the daily services in the Temple with prayers, and also a corresponding division in the country towns, answering to the divisions (guards, v. משמר) of priests and Levites. Taan. IV, 2 על וכ׳ מ׳ היה ומשמר משמר כל corresponding to every guard was.a post of priests, Levites and Israelites stationed in Jerusalem. Ib. 4 מ׳ בו אין no prayer meeting of the md dmad took place. - מ׳ אנשי, v. אנוש; a. fr. -- Pl. as ab. Ib. 2 מ׳ הן אלו this is the origin of the mgdmadoth. Ib. 27b, a. e. מ׳ אלמלא but for the prayer meetings of &c. Meg. III, 6 בראשית במעשה במ׳ at the prayer meetings the first chapter of Genesis was read (one section each day of the week).
מעמיד m. (כמד II) support, frame. Sabb. 60a; 15b המ׳ אחר הולך הכל (in levitical law) everything depends on the nature of the support (e. g. the seal is judged by its setting, the ladder by its frame). Tosef. Kel. B. Bath. II, 5 למ׳ a piece of a web which can be used for the weaver's frame, v. נוולה. -- Pl. מעמידין. Y. Yeb. XII, 12db top עץ של מ׳ the main body of the shoe made of wood. Y. Sabb. VI, 8b מעמידיו אחר it depends on the nature of its supporters (i. e. the parts which keep the framework in position; (Bab. ib. 60a מסמרותיו; Tosef. Kel. B. Mets. III, 13 השלובים).
מעמקים m. pl. (b. h.; עמק) depths. Ab. dR. N. ch. III מצולה למעמקי כשירדתי when I went down to the depths of the abyss.
מען, Lev. R. s. 32 מתמענת, v. מעט.
מענה m. (b. h.; ענה I) answer. Midr. Till. to Ps. VIII מ׳ לו מצאו לא they knew not what to answer him.
מענה f. (b. h.; preced.) 1) turn of the plough, furrow, furrom's length. Tosef. Hull. IV (V), 6. Ohol. XVII, 2; a. e. - 2) (perh. מענה m.) handle of the plough; coulter. Tosef. Shebi. III, 20 מ׳ לה יסמוך שלא ובלבד; Y. ib. IV, 35bbot. המ׳ את יססמוך שלא ובלבד provided thatt(in training the cow for ploughing) he will not press the coulter (so as to make the appearance of real ploughing).
מענין, מענין m. (ענן I) augur from clouds. Targ. O. Deut. XVIII, 10 מכ׳ ed. Berl. (oth. ed. מענ׳, מעונן). -- Pl. מענניא, מעננין, מע׳. Ib. 14 מע׳ ed. Berl. (oth. ed. מעכ׳,. מעונביא).

מעפורת, מעפרת f. (denom. ofעפר) [duster.] apron. any garment for the protection of clothes. Zeb. 94b; Hull. 123b מ׳ כדי enough to be used as an apron. Sabb. 9b וכ׳ מ׳ משיניח from the time he puts the hair-cutters wrap upon his knees. Ib. וכ׳ מעפרתו משיערה (Rashi; מעפורתו) from the time he shakes his wrap off (to prepare for bathing). - Esp. a travelling cloak wwith a hood (cmp. Sm. Ant. s. v. Cucullus), also a short cloak with a hood (pal- liolus). Tosef. Meg. IV (III), 30 וכ׳ במ׳ עטוף for one wrapt .. it is unbecoming to in a travelling cloak, a birrus . . read &c.
