one commits mm' ilaah (i. e. they retain their sacred char-- acter in spite of a mistake made at their slaughtering). Ib. בה איןמדעלין it has no longer a sacred character. Ib. מעלה I m. (part. Hif. of עלה); עשן מעלה Smoke- Raiser, name of a plant used as an ingredient of frank- incense (umitory). Ker. 6a. Tosef. Yoma I, 8 (ref. to בענן, Lev. XVI, 2) כ׳ מ׳ בו שנותן מלמד this intimates that he must add md'aile'ashan. [Ib. I, 6; Y. ib. III, 41a היו ע׳ במ׳ . . בקיאין understood how to make the smoke of the frankincense rise; Bab. ib. 38a ע׳ להעלות.]

מעלה f. (b. h.; preced.) 1) ascent, step. Midd. II, 3 מ׳ רום the height of every step; a. e. -- TTl. מעלות. Ib. Succ. V, 4 המ׳ שיר היורדות מ׳ עשר חמשה fifteen steps leading , corresponding to the fifteen Songs of Steps' down . m (Ps. CXX to CXXXIV). Ib. 53a מ׳ עשרה חמש הני those fifteen (SSongs of) Steps. מעלי (מעלי), pl. o טכלא. מעלי m. (עלי; cmp. יעל, תועלת) achievement, profit; good. Targ. II Chr. XIII, 2 דמ׳ שמא a name of good por- tent. -- Targ. Lam. IV, 9 מ׳ better of. - Ber. 10a דלא בנין מעלו (cmp. בליעל) bad children; דמ׳ בני (cmp. הנייה ch.) good children (Ms. M, דמעלי זרעא, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note). -- bsed as adj. B.
