מצה f. (b. h.; מצץ) 1) [dry, prcssed bread,] unleaven- ed bread, esp. the bread served at the Passover meal. Pes. X, 3. Ib, 5 וכ׳ מ׳ פסח. . . אמר שלא כל whoever does not exx- plain, at the meal, the following three ceremonies, has not done his duty, and these they are; the Passover sacrifice, the eating of matsah and the bitter herbs. Men. V, 1 כל מ׳ באות המנחות all meal offerings are offered in an un- leavened condition, opp. המן. Pes. 35a . . הבאים דברים במ׳ חובתו ידי בהן יוצא אדם . . one performs his duty of eating matsah (on the first Passover night) with such things only as are capable of eavening (the five species of grain); a. fr. -- Pl. מצות. Mekh. Bo, s. 8 מ׳ כל אני שומע במשמע I might think anything unleavened is included (may be used for eating on the first Passover night); a. fr. --- 2) המ׳ עור, or מ׳ a hide not tanned by a process of fementation, uuntanned hide. Kel. XVII, 15. Gitt. 22a; Sabb. 79a וכ׳ מ׳ הן עורות שלשה there are three kinds of hides, matsah &c., v. דיפתרא. Ib. וכ׳ כמשמעו מ׳ m. is what its name implies, not salted and foured nor tanned with gall-nut.

מצובה, מ׳ פי pr. n. pl. Pi M 'tsubah (Maasab, Neub. Geogr. p. 22), in the district of Tyre. Y. Dem. II, 22d top (ed. Krot. מצובת; Tosef. Shebi. IV, 9 ציבא פומא).
מצוביתא t.. p 1מפובייתא) (v.ציב) twftsorthrums. Sabb. 105a (expl. קירוס) מ׳ (Ms. . מצוביי׳, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 6) the thrums or slips to which the threads of the warp are attached. Ib bV מצוביי׳ שליף Ms. O. a. Rashi (ed. מצבייתא; Ms. M. מצובתא; Ms. AIf. מסוביתא, v. סיכ) pulled the thrums (of his garment, to indicate his anger). -- [2) (v. ציבא II) dry twigs, chips. Succ. 29a זיקא אאתא מ׳ מבלבל וקא Ar. (ed. ציבותא מייתי וקא; Ms. M. 1 צבייתא; 2 ציוותא; ed. Pes. a. oth. ציבי) a wind came and stirred up the withered twigs of the covering of the Succah.

מצודה f. (b. h.; צוד) hunting apparatus, net, trap; bow. Kel. XXI, 3, v. אשות. Ib. XV, 6 החולדה מצודת a. trap for weasels. Sabb. 43b כמ׳ יעשנה שלא he must not. spread the mat so as to form a trap (for the bees). Esth. R. to III, 2 (ref. to Ps. CXL, 6) וכ׳ או״ה לי פרשו מ׳ the nations laid a trap to ruin me, saying to me, worship idols &c. Ab. III, 16 וכ׳ על פרוסה מ׳ a net is spread over all the living (none can escape divine judgment); a. e. -- Ber. 9b; Pes. 11 9a דגים בה שאין זו כמ׳ Ms. M. (v. Rabb. D. מצודתא f. ch. =h. מצודה, 1) nct, trap. Y. Kil. I, 27a bot. וכ׳ מצודתיה כהנא פרס הכא herewith Kahana laid his net for Resh Lakish and caught him; Gen. R. s. 7, end (some ed. מצדחיה); a. e. - 2) stronghold. -- Pl. מצודתא. Targ. Jud. VI, 2 (ed. Lag. מבדאתא). V. מצדתא.
מצוה f. (b. h.; צוה) command, esp. rcligious act, mer- itorious deed. Hull. 141a, a. fr. מ׳ לדבר for a religious piurpose, opp. הרשות לדבר for a secular or religiously in- diferent purpose. -מ׳־ מלחמת v. ממלחמה. -- Ab. IV, 11 אחת מ׳ one good deed, opp. עברה sin. Ib. מ׳ מ׳ שכר the reward of a good deed is another good deed, v. גרר. Ib.
