מרקוליס pr. n. Mercurius, name of the Roman di- vinity, identified with the Grecian Hermes; esp. a statue or way-mark dedicated to Heromes (v. Luibker Reallex. s. vv. Hermes and Hermae). Snh. VII, 6 היא זו למ׳ אבן הזורק עבודתו casting a stone on a merculis (hermaeon), that is the way of worshipping it. Ib. 64a היא מ׳ א״ל they said to him, it was a merculis (at which you cast a stone). Ib. תנן במ׳ אבן הזורק the Mishnah reads, he who casts a stone on a m. Ab. Zar. IV, 1 וכ׳ מ׳ בצד. . . אבנים שלש if three stones near one another are found by the side of a mi., they are forbidden for use. Ib. 50a המ׳ מן שנשרו אבנים stones which have fallen off a m. - Tosef. ib. VI (VII), 13 אסור שעליו מה וכל מ׳ a m. with all that is on it is for- bidden. Ib. 15, sq. (also מרקולס). Ab. מרקחת f. (b. h.; preced.) druggist's preparation, drug; poison. Gen. R. s. 10 (׳Rashr; מרקחותיו, pl. of מיקחה), v. סם.
מרקחתא f. (preced.) a spiced dish. Lam. R. introd. (R. Abbahu 2) (ref. to Ez. XXIV, 10) כהדא תוסס גופן היה מ׳ their bodies were bubbling (hot with grief) like a spiced broth; Yalk. Ez. 363.

מרר (b. h.) 1) to drip; 2) (cmp. ארס) to be bitter. -V. מור, מר, מרור &c. Pi. מרר to make bitter; to affict. Pes. X, 5 על מרור וכ׳ המצרים שמררו שום we eat bitter herbs in memory of the Egyptians embittering the lives of our fathers in Egypt. Cant. R. to I, 13 (play on מר, ib.) ממרר אברהם וכ׳ עצמו Abraham afffdicted himself and plagued himself with sufferings; ib. to III, 6; a. e. Hlif. המר same. Gen. R. s. 98 (play on וימדרהו, Gen. XLIX, 23) לאחיו שה׳ who made his brothers suffer;שהמירו אחיו לו whom his brothers made suffer; לאדונתו שה׳; who made his mistress suffer; אדונתו לו שהמירה (v. Matt. K.) whom his mistress made suffer. Sabb. 88b (play on המר צרר, Cant. I, 13) וכ׳ לי ומינמר שמיצר אע״פ although my Beloved decrees anguish and suffering for me; a. e. Hithpa. התמרי, Nithpa. נתמרי to become sticky and bitter from handling myrrh. Cant. R. to I, 13 ידיו. כל מתמררות (Matt. K. מתמורר׳, Hithpol.) whoever plucks it (myrrh), gets his hands sticky (and bitter). Num. R. s. 16 (play on מורי, Cant. V, 1 וכ׳ בגלות נתמררו they be- came bitter (affected with sin) in captivity, and were sweetened (atoned for their sins) by martyrdom.
