מתלהם m., pl. מתלהמים (b. h.; להם, cmp. לחם) pro- fessing attachment, flatterers, hypocritical sympathizers. Sifre Num. 85 (ref. to Num. XI, 1 [read:] כמתאאוננים אין וכ׳ ותרגנו אומר הוא וכן כמ׳ אלא k'mithon'nim means like those who pretend to sympathize (with their neighbors' troubles, v. אזנן), and even so we read (Deut. I, 27) vatte-- ragmu &c. וכ׳ כמ׳ מדברים שהיו ותרגנו מהו what does vat- terag'nu mean? They were speaking like sympathizers (with ref. to Prov. XXVI, 22); Yalk. Num. 732. Sifre Ieut. 24 (ref. to Deut. l. c.) ואומרים . . . יושבים שהיו מלמד וכ׳ שנ׳ כמ׳ ומתרגנים כמ׳ דברים which intimates that they sat in their tents and spoke words like sympathizers and formed crowds like sympathizers, as we read (Prov. l. c.) &c.; Yalk. ib. 80b. Ib. כמ׳ ומבכין בוכין (or כמתלהם, sing.]m not להם כמת) weeping and moving to tears like sym- pathizers.
מתמהא, מתמחא, v. מהי I.
מתן [to stretch,] (cmp. ארך) to be long, slow; to wait; esp. (of fruits taken off the ttree) to lie over for commplete rpening. Toh. IX, 5 וכ׳ שיהו שימתונו that they (the olives) may lie over so that they be easy to crush; ib. שימתונו שימלחם that they may lie over until they be ripe for salting; Tosef.ib. X, 10 ושימלחם שימתינם (Hif.) to let them lie over &c. Hif. המתין 1) (neut. verb) to last, remain fresh, keep. Makhsh. VI, 2 שימתינו בשביל(Maim. in comment. ed. Dehr. שימתונו) that they may remain fresh (Maim.). Sabb. XXIII, 5 (of a corpse) שימתין בשביל (Ar. שימתן, Nif.) thhat it may be preserved. -- 2) to keep, to et (fruits) lie over. Tosef. Makhsh. l. c., V. sup a. - 3) to wait, tarry, postpone. Hull. II, 4. Ib. 47b וכ׳ עד לו המתיני postpone his circum- cision until &c. Y. Pes. X, 37d וכ׳ נמתין אילו (not ממתין) if we were to wait (with the recital of the exodus) until &c. Gen. R. s. 18 (play on יתבששו, Gen. II, 25) המתינו לא וכ׳ בשלותן they did not remain in their happiness for six hours; a. fr. - 44) to be slow, patient. Ab. d'R. N. ch. Iשיהא דבריו על מקפיד יהא ואל בדבריו ממתין אדם that man should be slow and patient in giving his opinion, and not angrily insist on his words.

מתנא c. (תנן) steaming. reeking. Pes. 111b bot. [read;] כרעיה אדמ׳ (v. Rashi a. l.; Rashb. אדמותנא, read אדמתונא; ed. כרעא אדמייתניה; Ms. M. כרעיה אדמיתינא, Ithpe. of תנן) while his foot is still steaming (from bathing). V. מתונא.
מתנא, מי׳, מו׳ m. (מתן; cmp. משיחאII. fr. מש) cord, strap. B. Bath. 89a מיתנא Rashb. (ed. מתנה, h. form) the cord of the scales. Men. 35b top (ביה) מיתלי דכי הוכי כל וכ׳ במת׳ Rashi (ed. במו׳; Ms. R. 2 במי׳) whenever it is lifted up by its strap and it (the capsule of the Tfillin) follows after it (the strap not breaking). Erub. 34a ליתיה ומ׳ בכוותא let him bring it down through the window (of the tower) and with a string. Sabb. 51b בעלמא במי׳ לה סגי (Ms. M. במיתגא, incorr.) a mere string would have been sufficient for controlling the animal. B. מתנה f. (b. h.; נתן) 1) gift, present, donation; grant, privilege. Y. Peah III, 17d bot. וכ׳ מ׳ . . מ׳ היא איזו what is a mattanah? All my property be given to - as a gift from now, contrad. to דיאתיקי. B. Bath. 147a למתנת מניין וכ׳ שכיב how can it be proven that the donation of one expecting to die is legal by Biblical law (without formal possession) Kidd. 6b, a. fr. מ׳ שמה להחזיר ע״כ ממ׳ a present made with the condition that it must be returned, is legally a present (the recipient s property for the time being); a. v. fr. -- Pl. מתנות.
