נחר (sec. r. of חור, חרר) 1) to perforate, esp. to kill by stabbing. Hull. V, 3 הנוחר if one stabs (instead of cutting according to ritual). Pes. 49b לנוחרו מותר you may stab him. - [Sifra Ahire, Par. 9, ch. XIII תנחור שלא, read; תנחש, v. נחש; Rabad תנקור, v. נקר II.]-- 2) (denom. or נחירים)o discharge mucus, run. Nidd. 64bשנוחרת זמן כל as long as the healing wound discharges matter. V. נחירה. Pl. ניחר to be stabbed. Hull. 17a (ref. to ישחט, Num. נחרתא f. (preced.) wrath. Gen. R. s. 67 (ref. to Am. I, 11) וכ׳ ונחרתיה עוברתיה his anger and his wrath do not cease &c.; Yalk. ib. 116 וזחרתיה (corr. acc.).
נחש (b. h.; cmp. לחש) to whisper. i. ניחש to divine, to make action dependent on an omen, to augur. Tosef. Sabb. VII (VIII), 13 מנחש איזהו וכ׳ a diviner (under the law, Lev. XIX, 26) is he who says, my staff fell out of my hand' (it portends evil) &c.; Snh. 65b. Ib. 66a וכ׳ בחולדה המנחשים אלו כגון like those who divine (evil or luck) from a weasel, birds &c. Y. Sabb. VI, end, 8d עליו לבוא סופו המנחש כל if one believes in omens, what he fears will finally befall him (with ref. to נחש לא Num. XXIII, 25, changed into נחש לו); Ned. 32a נחש לו המנחש כל for him who believes in omens, the omen exists (will be realized). Ib. מנ׳ שאינו אדם כל he who rejects divination. Mekh. B'shall. s. 2 ינחשו שמא וכ׳ ויחזרו lest they consider it a bad omen and go back. VI, 8c bot. סימן יש ׳ שאין פbאע although you must not make them an omen, they are a ign (pre- sage); Hull. 95b. Ib. ׳ אינו . . שאינו ׳ כל an omen which is not proposed in the manner of Eliezer . . (Gen. XXIV, 133, sq.) or of Jonathan (I Sam. XIV, 9, sq.) is not con- sidered a divination (in the sense of Lev. XIX, 26); a. fr. -- Pl. נחשים. Tanh. Balak 4 ׳ בעל, v. supra..
נחש m. (b. h.; נתש) 1) [the hissing,] serpent. Gen. R. s. 22 הקדמוני ׳ the original serpent (the seducer of Eve). Ib. s. 20 תשובות געל רשע זה ׳ that serpent iss wicked and skilled in arguments. Bekh. 8a וכ׳ שנים לשבע ׳ a serpent's pregnancy lasts seven years, and for that wicked animal I find no parallel (in the vegetable kingdom). Gen. R. s. 54 בית של הנ׳ the dommestic serpent (harmless); a. fr. - Pl, נתשים. Ib. s. 84 ועקרבים ׳ snakes and scorpions; a. fr. -- 2) a puagent (poisonous) fluid in the leaves or in the stems of onions kept for a long time in the ground.
