Part. pass. עגום; f עגומה; (cmp. עסף, כפת) a) pressed down, tied. Num.R. s. 10 ע׳ לשונו his (the drunken man's) tongue is tied. -- Trnsf. (of a woman) עגומה tied to an absent hus- band, prevented from marrying (cmp. עגן). Y. Snh..VVI, 23c בביתי ע׳ יוששבת ואני.. מתי עד how long yet shall my hus- band dwell with thee (Alexandria), and I(Jerusalem) sit a living widow in my house; Y. Hag. 2גן (b. h.; v. עגם) to bend; to tie. - V. עוגין. - Part. pass. f עגונה tied to an absent husband, deserted wife. Y. Gitf. IV, beg. 45c ע׳ יושבת תהא שלא that she may not remain a. deserted wife (prevented from marrying again); a. fr. -- Pl. עגונות. Ruth R. to I, 13 (ref. to תעגנה, ib.) יכולות וכ׳ לבלתי ע׳ יושבות . . . can you afford to sit tied, so as not to get married ? Gitt. 33a, a. fr. ע׳ תקנת מפני as a measure in favor of deserted wives (that they may be enabled to marry again). Lev. עגן ch. same, to press, tie; to seclude, imprison. Targ. Is. XXIV, 22 וכ׳ ויעגנונון and they shall press them into the prison house (ed..Lag. ויגונונון, ed. Ven. ויגינונון, contr. of ויעגינו׳ Af..(); Ar. ויעגנון thpa.; h. text סגרו). - Part. pass. עגין; pl. עגינין. Ib. XLII, 7. Ib. 22, v. next w. Ib. XLIX, 9. Pa. עגן to make lonelly, desertt (a wife). Gitt. 26b ומעגן לה ומותיב he might desert her. Hthpa.אתעגןז, איעגן to be secluded, tied up; (of a woman) to be prevented from marrying, be an עגונה. B. Mets. 19a הוא ותתיב תתעגן דלא משום Ms. M. (ed. תעגין, corr. acru.) it was done in order that she might not remaiin a widow in life.
עגנא m. (preced.) solitude, prison. Targ. Is. XXIV, 22 ע׳ לבית, v. preced. Ib. XLII, 22 עגנהון Ar. (Regia עגניהון pl.; ed. Lag. עיגונהוון; ed. Wil. עגינין, v. preced.).

עגרון m. (עגר =אגר) =אגרו, apt for storage, superior (wheat). Tosef. Dem. IV, 23 (ed. Zuck. אגרי, v. אגורי); Y. Naz. V, 54a אגרון.
עגש (dial. for נגש; cmp. Pesh. Ex. XXI, 29; 36) to attack, gore. Part. f עגישא. Gen. R. s. 80, beg. Ar., v. נגש.
עד m. (b. h.; עוד) turn, continuation; (prep.) up to, until, during, while; n place of. B. Mets. 87a; Snh. 107b אברהם עד up to Abraham's time, v. זקנה. B. Kam. 55a וכ׳ שואלני שאתה עד during the time that &c., instead of asking me &c. Gen. R. s. 58 וכ׳ ישקיע שלא עד before yet the Lord causes the sun of one righteous man to set, he causes that of another to rise. Kidd. 29b שנה כ׳ עד until a person is ttwenty years old. Ib. 31a וכ׳ כיבוד היכן עד how far does the duty of honoring parents go?; a. v. fr. -- Ber. 26b (ref. to ib. IV, 1up to four hours') וכ׳ בכלל ועד עד does it mean up to', and that up to' included, i. e. in- cluding the whole fourth hour of the day, or excluding the fourth hour? Nidd. 58b קמיפלגי בכלל ועד בעד לימא shall we say, their difference turns on the question whether until' is meant to include or to exclude the terminus? Ib. בכלל עד ולא עד ואיכא בכלל ועד עד איכא sometimes until' means inclusive of, and sometimes excltusive of. עד m. (b. h.; עוד) [present, confirming,] (cmp. סהד) witness, evidence. Hull. 10b, a. e. וכ׳ נאמן אחד עד in matters of ritual the statement of one witness is suffcient. Bekh. 36a, a. e. עד מפי עד a witness testifying to what he has heard from an eye--witness. R. Hash. 26, a. e. עד אין דיין נעשה a witness in the case cannot act asudge. Keth. 21b דיין נעשה עד a witness may act as judge; a. v. fr. -- Pll. עדים. Ib. ע׳ ידי חתימות המכירין דיינים if the judges kknow (can identify) the signatures of the witnesses to a. document. Ib.
