עובי, עבי m. (b. h.; עבה) thickness, diameter. Y. Ber. I, 2c bot. וכ׳ רקי של עובין tthe thickness (diamgter) of the heavens is equal to a journey of 500 years; של עוביה ארן the diameter of the earth; Gen. R. s. 4; Pes. 94a. Gen. R. s. 42 בעוביה טעין קורה בעל the owner of the beam must put his shoulder to the thickest part of it; Ber. 64a וכ׳ בעביה, v. כאן. Tanb. Sh'moth 3 תקרה של עביה כותן וכ׳ ראשה בצד זו he places the thick side (trunk) of one beam by the side of the top (the thinner part) of the other beam; Ex. R. s. 1. Ohol. XVI, 1 המרדע בע׳ measured by the diameter of the handle of a plough; Sabb. 17a וכ׳ בכביו אין שאמרו מרדע the handle of which they speak is less than a handbreadth in diameter, but is a hand- breadth in circumference; a. e.

עובר m. (עבר) passer-by, transient. ע׳ מום, v. עבר. Snh. 70a גלילאה ע׳ דרש a Galilean travelling lecturer preached; Hull. 27b; (Sabb. 88 גלילאה ההוא). -- Mostly ושב ע׳ traveller. -- P. עוברים, עוברין. Y. Shebi. III, beg. 34a וכ׳ ושבין לע׳ חשו לא they cared not for eventual trav- ellers (who might misconstrue the act); a. fr. -- Snh. 103b דרכים לעוברי מצויה שפיתו מפני because his bread was ready for travellers, i. e. he was hospitable. עובר m. (עבר Pi.) embryo. Hull. IV, 1 הע׳ הוציא ידו את if the embryo put forth its forefoot. Ib. 58a, a. e. הוא אמו ירך ע׳ the embryo is a thigh (part) of its mother, i.. e. comes under the same law. Yeb. 37a ניכר עוברה ימיה לשליש her embryo (pregnancy) is felt when she has arrived at the third portion of her days of pregnancy (three months). Sifre Deut. 29, v. עבר Hithpa; a. fr. - Ab. עוג (b. h.) pr. n. m. Og, king of Bashan. Gen. R. s. 42 (ref. to Gen. XIV, 13) פליט הוא ע׳ הוא Og is the one that escaped; Tanh. Huck. 25. Ber. 54a וכ׳ ע׳ לזרוק.. אבן the stone which Og king of Bashan wanted to cast upon Israel. Ib.b, a. fr.
