עולם m. (b. h.; עלם I). [strength, endurance,] nature, existence, world; (b. h.) life-time, lernity. Y. Ber. IV, 7b bot. (ref. to עולם עד, I Sam. I, 22) לוי של עולמו אין והלא וכ׳ but the life-time (active service) of the Levite is only up to fifty years. Kidd. 15a (ref.to Ex. XXI, 6לעלכ) אמינא הוה ממש לע׳ I might have thought, that it meant really for ever (for life); יובל של לעולמו לע׳ לו קמשמע it is intimated (by וכ׳ ושבתם, Lev. XXV, 10) that lolam means up to the period of the jubilee. Ber. 17a וכ׳ בחייך תראה עולמך mayest thou see (enjoy) thy existence during thy life- time, and thy future (reward be reserved) for the life of the world to come.
