עורף m. (b. h. ערף; ערף) 1) hind part of the head with the neck, neck. Hull. I, 4 מןהע השוחטif one cuts the animal from the neck (frontward); ib. 19b ע׳ מאי what is meant by עורף ממש ע׳ אילימא shall I say , the real oref (occiput)? Ib. הע׳ את הרואה מול, v. מול I. Ib. (ref. to Jer. II, 27) פנים להדי דע׳ מכלל from this we conclude that ׳oref is the part opposite the face. Ab. Zar. 25a (ref. to Gen. Hag. 15a in the heavens above there is עיפוי ולא ע׳ ולא. ישיבה לא no sitting down (for deliberation), no confict, no division and no junction (Maim. to Snh. ch. X; Rashi; no back, i. e. everything is in sight, nor weariness).
עורפילא m. (dimin. of ערף, v. Deut. XXXII, 2; XXXIII, 28; v. ערף) fne rain, drieele. Taan. 4a top ע׳ וכ׳ אפילו (Ms. M. ער׳) the drizzling rain is good even for the seeds under a hard clod. Ib. (phonetic etym.)

עורקמא (ערקומא) m. (ערקם, Parl of עקם) 1) knee (cmp. ברכה), דמיא ע׳ a pool. Yoma 78a עור׳ (Ms. M. 2 ערקו׳; ed. once עורקומא). Meg. 28b (Ms. O. ערקו׳); Kidd. 71b. -- 2) hough of an animals hindleg. Hull. 76a ערקו׳. - Cmp. רקוב.

עושף, עשף m. (cmp. חסף, a. b. h. חשף) the curved blade of a double-edged axe, that part which is used for paring or chipping, adee, contrad. to בקוע בית that part which is used for splitting, v. ביקוע. Kel. XIII, 3 עושפו (Ar. עשפו; R. S. a. l. reads; אשפו). Tosef. ib. B. Mets. I, 3 הטהור מן ועשפו .. קרדום (ed. Zuck.ועשהו, R. S. to Kel. XI, 4 ועשאו, corr. acc.) an axe which one made of unclean material, but the adze shaped part of it is of clean material.
עושפא ch. same, adze. Targ. I Sam. XIII, 20 (h. text מחרשה). -- Pl. עושפיא. Ib. 21.
עושק, עשק m. (b. h.; עשק) withholding what is due to one's neighbor, oppression. Sifra K'dosh., ch. III, Par. 2 (ref. to Lev. XIX, 13) ממון של דבר ע׳ אף 'oshek likewise (iike גזל) refers to money matters (not to personal in jury). B. Mets. 111a (interch. with עשק) זהו. . ושוב ללך וכ׳. ע׳ saying , go and come agaiin (for thy wages &c.),, that is 'oshek; I have what is due to thee, but I will not give it thee, that is gaeel (robbery). Ib. שחייבה ע׳ איזהו וכ׳ what withholding is it for which the Law requires a. sacrifice (Lev. V, 21 sq.)? ממונא ליה דכפר when one denies owing money. Ib. גזל זהו ע׳ זהו 'oshek and gael are the same; Yalk. Lev. 605. B. Mets. 48a לעשקו כלי לו יחד he assigned to him an object (as security) for the wages withheld from him; Yalk. Lev. 479 לעושקו; a. fr.
עושקא, עו ch. same. Targ. O. Lev. V, 23. Targ. Is. LIV, 14; a. fr. -- Targ. II Esth. III, 8 בע׳ מזבנין they sell with oppression, i. e. overreach (cmp. הוגאח), opp. בשויאו at value. -- Pl. עושקיא. Targ. Prov. XXVIII, 16 עושקוי (ed. Wil. עו׳).
עושר, עשר m. (b. h.; עשר) plenty, wealth, riches. Ab. IV, 9, v. עוני. B. Bath. 9b ע׳ בעלי wealthy men; a. e. Gen. R. s. 63 (play on ויעתר, Gen. XXV, 21; cmp. עותרא) בע׳ תפלות שפך he poured out prayers plentifully; Yalk. ib. 10 כעתר (corr. acc., or בעתר, a Hebr. adapt. of עותר).
עות (v. אות I), Nif. נעות to be gratifled, enjoy. Y. Ab. Zar. I, 39c top, a. e. Samuel reads יעותו (with ref. to לעות; Is. L, 4).

עות, pr. n. m., v. עזת.
עות (b. h.; v. עוה) to be curved, crooked. Pi. עות, עיות 1) to perverttt, wrest; to corrupt. Num. R. s. 10 הדין את ומעוותין . . . כך מתוך in consequence (of drinking) they cause the Law to be forgotten, and they pervert judgment. Nidd. 10b שמעוותות מפני . . . בודקות אין אותן (not בודקין) they (the women) must not examine them (the young girls) with the fingers, because they may corrupt them (teach them unnatural gratificationm; Rashi they may wound them). - Koh. R. to I, 15 (ref. to מעות ib.) וכ׳ תורה מדברי עצמו מעוות אדם אאין אם as long as a person (though doing wrong) does not pervert himmself through wilful misinterpretation of the Law, there is a. remedy for him; וכ׳ מעוות משאדם but as soon as a person perverts himself &c.; a. fr. - Nidd. 12b (adapting Koh.l. c.) תקנוה הן עותוה הן they make her crooked (the evidence on the cloths will make her unfit for marital inter- course), and they make her straight (if the evidence is favorable). - 2) to ofend, egxcite displeasure; wound the feelings of.
