עילה, עילא f. (עלל; cmp. בילה fr. בלל) [going about, bringing about; cmp. סיבה end,] 1) circumstance, cause; pretext. Keth. 20b וכ׳ וטהרו מצאו ע׳ they found some (paltry) reason to declare clean a spot in the land of Israel; Naz. 65b עילא; [Rashi; עילא e= עילעא rib of a human body]. Y. Keth. III, end, 28a לשחררו ע׳ מצאתי Ihave found an opportunity to set him free. Y. Ter. X, 47b; Y. Ab. Zar. II, 42a (in Chald. dict.) ע׳ ידי על, v. זבינתא. Gen. עילוי, על׳ m. (עלה) 1) going up; elevation. Cant. R. to III, 6; VIII, 5 מהמדבר עיפלויה her (Israel's) rise dates from the desert; (Tanh. Sh'moth 14 עלייה). Tanh. B'huck. 3 (ref. to ויקח, Gen. II, 15) ע לשוון אלא ויקח אין he took' has the meaning of elevation (with ref. to Gen. XII, 15), v. עלה Pi.; a. e. - 2) valuation, vvalne. Y. Naz. עילויא, על׳ ch. same, 1) rise, improved stage. Ber. 36a בפת אחרינא ע׳ ליה אית (four) is capable of a still higher stage by being made into bread; ע׳ ליה לית אחרינא (oil) has no higher stage.
