ענין, עניין, עי׳m. (b. h.; צנה I) [answer, correspond- ing afair,] correspondence, relation; sucyect, ocect, afair, idea. Sifra introd. כענינו שהוא in keeping with the general subject to which it is related, v. טען I; כענינו שלא out of relation to the general subject. Kidd. 6a שעסוקין והוא ע׳ באותו provided they are engaged in conversation on that subject (of marriage). Ib. ע׳ באותו לע׳ מע׳ when their con-- versation changed fromm one point to another all, however, having relation to that subject (of marriage, e. g. about dowry, about the man's financial condition). Lag. עניניהון, pl.) the extension of their pur- pose. -- Ned. 51a קדמאה ע׳ כי ליה אמר he said to him something similar to the first proposition (let thy wife offer me a measure of wine); קדמאה ע׳ כי עיביד do ac- cording to the first proposition. ענן I pr. n. m. Anan, an Amora, disciple of Samuel. Y. Sabb. III, beg. 5c. Keth. 69a; a. fr.
ענן II m. (b. h.) cloud, frequently used in the sense of cover, protection. Gen. R. s. 60 קשור ע׳ היה . . . זמן כל וכ׳ as long as Sarah lived, a cloud was tied over the entrance of her tent; ע׳ אותו פסק שמתה וכיון and when she was dead, that cloud ceased. Cant. R. to II, 6 וימינו וכ׳ שכינה ענן זה . . . and his right hand embraces me', that means the cloud ofhe Divine Presence in the future world (with ref. to Is. LX, 19). Y. Taan. III, 66c, v. עגיו; a. fr. - Pl. עננים. Taan. 9b (ref. to Gen. II, 6) וכ׳ מתגברים שהע׳ ממלמד this teaches that the clouds (like a hose) swell and rise to the sky, and there open their mouth like a hose and receive the rain water; Gen. R. s. 13. Ib. מלמעלה אלא ע׳ אין clouds (like a hose to receive the waters) come from above (ref. to Dan. VII, 13); מלמטה אלא ע׳ אין the clouds come from below (ref. to Ps. CXXXV, 7); Y. Succ. I, 52b bot.; Yalk. Ps. 883. R. Hash. 3a (ref. to Num. XXI, 1) ונסתלקו . .. שמע כבוד ענני he heard that Aaron was dead, and the clouds of glory were removed. Tanh. R'eh 16 ומעלה רוחות משיב וכ׳ ומוריד ע׳ causes the winds to blow, and the clouds to rise, and the rains to come down; a. fr.
