ענף c. (b. h.; cmp. ענב) ramification, branch, foliage; locks. Men. 42a ע׳ אלא ציצית אין tsitsith (Num. XV, 38, sq.) means locks (fringes), as we read (Ez. VIII, 3) &c. Sifra. Emor, Par. 12, ch. XVI (ref. to עבת עץ, Lev. XXIII, 40) וכ׳ דומה עצו שענף את (not עצן), v. עבות; Pesik. II'kah., p. 183b עצו שע׳ ען (corr. acc.). - Pl. ענפים. Succ. 32b שענפיו וכ׳ חופין; Y. ib. III, 53c bot., v. עבות. Ib. וכ׳ חופות ענפיו its (the Zargunahs) foliage covers the largest portion of it, but forms no veil; a. e.

ענק (b. h.; cmp. אנק, חנק) 1) to be narrow, elon- gated; denom. נק, עונקא &c. - 2) to press, force, rule. Gen. R. s. 26 (expl. ענקים) ואומרים חמה גלגל עונקים שהיו וכ׳ הורד they seized the globe of the sun and said, Send us rain down; Yalk. ib. 47. Num. R. s. 16 (ref. to ילידו הענק, Num. XIII, 28) השמש את עונק שהיה שראוהו tthey (the spies) saw him fo ce the sun (to give rain); Tanh. Shlah 7. Hif. העניק 1) same. Yoma 10a (ref. to Num. l. c.) בקומתן החמה שמעניקין they lorded it over the sun by virtue of their height; Sot. 34b (Rashi; they had the ap- pearance of sgueefing their heads into the sun). - 2) [to suspend around the neck, load,] to outfit the emancipated slave with gifts (Deut. 2נק m. (preced.) an emancipated slave's outfit. Kidd. 16b וכ׳ אמה וע׳ לעצמו עברי עבד ע the outfit of a Hebrew slave belongs to himself, and that of a Hebrew handmaid to herself; וכ׳ ומציאתה העבריה אמה ע׳ the outfit of a Hebrewt handmaid and what she finds belong to her father; a. e.

ענק II m. (b. h.; ענק) [neck,] necklace, chain. Erub. 54a (ref. to Prov. I, 9) וכ׳ על שרף זה כע׳... אאם if a man trains himself tto be like a necklace which is loose around the neck, and is (sometimes) seen and (sometimes) not seen (i. e. is yielding and modest), his learning will be es- tablished &c.; Yalk. Prov. 929 לצואר שיפה (read; שרפה). Yalk. Ps. 675 the Law is לצואר ע׳ a chain for the neck (Lev. R. s. 12 מונייק). B. Bath. 75a ע׳ לו עושין זכה לא if he is not worthy, they will make a chain for him. [Ib. זכה ע׳ לו עושין if he is worthy, they will make a necklace for him; omitted in Ms. R.; v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 9.]-- Pl. ענקים. Gen. ענקוקלות f. pl. (=ענקלקלות; ענקל, dimin. of פצק; cmp. עונקלא) little beads (of a neclace), a name for un-- developed grapes. Orl. I, S; expl. Y.iib. 61c top שלקי ענבים וכ׳ עד grapes which were smitten before they had grown to one-third of the normal size; (oth. opin.) לקו אפי׳ וכ׳ משהביאו even if they were smitten after having reached ones third of the normal size; ib. (as an abbreviation, נוטריקון) תלתיהון דלקו נבין grapes smitten in the first of their three stages. Sifra K'dosh., ch. V, Par. 3.

ענקמון m. (denom. of ענקים; ענק I) a troop of tall men (v. אספתרי), body-guard. Gen. R. s. 65 שהיתה מדינה למלד ע׳ מכתבת a province that was levying a body-guard (of tall men) for the King; Yalk. ib. 114 ענקמין כתבת (corr. acc.); Yalk. Jer. 332 עוקמין (corr. acc.).
ענר (b. h.) pr. n. m. Aner, one of Abraham's allies. Gen. R. s. 42; Tanh. Vayera 3; a. e.
ענש (b. h.; cmp. אנס) [to press,; to punish, fine. Zeb. 106b, a. e., וכ׳ ע׳ לא, v. זהר. Snh. 54a, a. fr. מן עונשין אין הדין, v. דין II. -- Ib. 43b הנסתרות על ע׳ לא the Lord did not punish undiscovered transgressions (committed in lsrael's camps).
