ערבה I f. (b. h. ערבים pl.; כרב I, v. ארבתא) willow, willow-branch, esp. the boughs of the willow attached to the Lulab, and the willow branch used in the lTemple in procession around the altar during the cluccoth festival. Sifra Emor, Par. 12, ch. XVI, a. e. (ref. to Lev. XXIII, 40) למקדש וע׳ ללולב ע׳ שתים נחל ערבי willows of the brook' alludes to two, one willow for the Lulab, and one for the Temple procession. Succ. 34a וכ׳ ניסוך ע׳ נטיעות עשר the law concerning ten young trees (Shebi. , 6), the custom of ftne procession with the willow branch, and that of the water libation are Sinaitic traditions (v. הלכה). Ib. ע׳ וכ׳ שלה קנה the willow (fit for the religious ceremony) has a red stem, its leaves are elongated, and their outlines plain (ot curved or serried). Ib. IV, 1 וכ׳ וע׳ לולב for the ceremony of the Lulab and of the willow branch there are six or eventually seven days. Ib. 3 ע׳ של נשביעי יום the seventh day of Succoth which is the special day for the 'Arabah (e הושענא יום, v. הושענא); a. fr. - Pl. ערבות. Ib. III, 4 עע ושתי הדסים שלשה in the Lulab there must be three myrtle boughs and two willow boughs; a. e.

ערבו pr. n. pl. Arbu. Gen. R. s. 33 (ref. to הערבים IKings XVII, 6) ע׳ ושמה . . היא עיר (ed. Wil. ערביf tthere is a ttown in the district ot Bethsbean whose (Chaldaic) name is Arbu (Arbi, so that or'biom may refer to the inhabitants of that place, v. Hull. 5a).
ערבוב, עי׳ m. (ערבב) mixture, fusion; confusion. Sabb. 85b וכ׳ וביטל ע׳ בא the interrlacing (of the plants overgrowing the ditch between them) undoes the ditch (as a separation); ib. מבטל ע׳ אין Ms. M. (ed. עירובו, corr. acc.); Gen. R. s. 4 לערבובו, v. מחלוקת; a. e. -- Pl. ערבובים, עי׳. Gen. R. s. 49 (ref. to Gen. XVIII, 25) שאילות עירבובי כאן יש there is a fusion of questions in this sentence (an interchange of queries between Abraham and God); Yalk. ib. 83.

ערבוביא, ער׳. עיר׳m. (preced.) mixture, confusion, tumult, motley crowd. Targ. Y. Deut. I, 22. - Sifre Deut. 20 (ref. to Deut. l. c.) וכ׳ דלדים בע׳ in a motley crowd, children pushing old men &c. Num. R. s. 12 (ref. to Ex. XXXV, 22) בע׳ ונשים אנשים ובאו . . . שהיו they pushed one another, and men and women came in a mixed crowd. Oant. R. to IV, 4 היא עי׳ מלחמת . . . מלחמה כל a battle in which more than sixty thousand are engaged is a tumultuous battle. Hull. 60a וכ׳ בע׳ הקבוה של רצונו אם if the Lord wanted a motley growth, why did he say, 'after its kind' with regard to trees? Yalk. Esth. 1056 (ref. tto נבוכה, Esth. III, 15) וכ׳ וע׳ בכיה הקביה הפיל the Lord cast weeping and confusion into Susan; a. e. --(Adv.) irregularly. Kil. V, 1 ע׳ נטוע שהוא כרם a vineyard which is planted ir- regularrly. Lev. Ned. 81a דרישא ע׳ וכ׳ מיתיא (Ar. חרפופיתא) tanles of the head cause blind-- ness; דמאני ע׳ scabs arising from neglected clothes; ע׳ דגופא from neglect of the body. Ib. דע׳ צערא (Yalk. ערבון, עי׳ I m. (כרב I) mingling, suit of followers. Ab. Zar. 39a עמה עולה שערבונה מפני (Rashi to 35b a. v. והחילק שעירבונה) because its following goes with it (borrowed fr. Ex. XII, 38), i. e. because all the small fish resembling the hillek are packed with it when offered for sale.
