פיטומת f. (פטם) [mortar and pestle,] trnsf. 1) m. (sub. קצה) the oblate part of the breast around the nipple. Nidd. V, 8 הפ׳ משישחיר (fBab. ed. 47a הפיטומות, corr. acc.) when the surroundings of the nipple begin to grow dark. - 2) the upper part (blossom end) of the onion. Y. Ter. IX, 46d top; X, beg. 47a וכ׳ פטומתו העביר if tthe upper part of it has been removed, it is considered as if cut in pieces. -- V. פיטמה.
פיטוס, פיטס (freq. פיטום, פיטם) c. (פטס to expand, cmp. פטם 2) 1) a large cylindrical vessel, cask or tub of earthen material (corresp. to rtiuo, a. to dolium; v. Sm. Ant.a Engl. ed., s. v. Dolium). B. Mets. IV, 12 (60a) התגר אחד פיטם . .. (Bab. ed. פיטום; Y. ed. Ven. a. Mish. ed. Nap. פיטם; v. Rabb. D. S. a.l. note 400) a merchant may buy wine from several presses and put it into one cask. פיטורי, פיטורין, פפ׳ I m. pl. (פטר; cmp. Prov. XVII, 14) water rushing through bars. Ber. 8a death from croup is ושט בפי כפיטורי like tthe gushing water at the entrance of a canal (when the sluice-bars are raised); [Ms. B. N. ושט בפי פטורי כפרוקי; Ms. M. marg. פיטמאIf, פיטמה, פט׳ f. (פטם 1) [pestle, mortar] a protuberance on the blossosm-end of fruits having the appearance of a pestle seated in a mortar (cmp. בוככנה); the upper portion of a fruit, v. פיטומת. Succ. III, 6 נטלה פטמתו if the pestlelike protuberance of an Ethrog is taken out; expl. Y. ib. III, 53a שושנתו אמרין תמן there (in Baby-- lonia) they say, its ily'; Bab. ib. 35b, v. בוכנה (v. Rashi a. l.).
