פעם c. (b. h.; preced.) 1) beat, step. - Pl. פעמות, פעמים. Y. Sabb. XVI, 15c וכ׳ פעמותיו בקול שהרגיש כיון when he perceived the sound of R. Yishmael's foosteps. Cant. R. to VII, 2 רגלים בפעמי אלא מדבר אינו the verse speaks of the steps of the festive pilgrimages; ib. יפיין היה ומה וכ׳ לפעמיך and what was the beauty of thy footsteps?' That they locked the door for all troubles (no troubles arose in the homes of the pilgrims during their absence).. Lam. R. introd. (R. Nahm.) רגלים לפעמי עולין היו ולא they have not gone up on festive pilgrimages; Yalk. Is. 302; a. e. - 2) time. Sabb. 12b וכ׳ קרא אחת פ׳ once it happened that he read &c. Pes. X, 4 (116a) אנו אין הלילות שבכל וכ׳ אחת פ׳ אלא מטבילין Ms. M. (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note) all other nights we dip (eatables) only once, and this night twice. Gen. פעפועא I m. (פעפע I) breaking, beating. - Pl. constr. פעפועי. Sabb. 109a וכ׳ ביעי פ׳ (some ed. פיעפועי) to make hashed eggs' (of roasted eggs) is forbidden (on the Sabbath).
פעפועא II f. (פעפע II) cover, darkness. Targ. Job XI, 17 (Ms. פיגפועא; h. text תעפה).
פעפועין m. pl. name of an herb, prob. (~~~~~p~~~) a kind of cress. Y. Peah VIII, 21a top (expl. by קקולין, q. v.); Y. Erub. III, 20a top; Bab. ib. 28a.
פעפע (v. פעע) 1) to crush, crumble. Y. YomaI, 38c bot. הכתלים את פעפענו אנו we (through our sins) have smashed the walls (with re. to Ps. CXXXVII, 7); Midr. Till. to Ps. l. c. Y. Sabb. VII, 9d sq. גושים המפעפע he that crushes clods. -- 2) to spread; to piierce, penetrate. Y. Orl. I, 61a אותו מפעפעין השרשים the roots pierce it (the pot). B. Bath. 10a מפעפעו אור קשה ברזל iron is hard, fre penetrates it; Koh. R. to VII, 26 מפעפעתו והאש. Hull. 105a החמין וכ׳ הידים את מפעפעין hot water enters into the skin of the hands, but does not wash away the fatty substance. Lam. R. to IV, 9 וכ׳ בהם מפעפע הריח אותו היה the flavor permeated them (creating a morbid appetite), and they died. Lev. R. s. 16, v. עכן. Y. Snh. X, 28a top ריחו והיה מפעפע and the favor of wine spread. פער (b. h.) 1) to open wide. Pesik. R. s. 4, end פערה וכ׳ עצמה החרובית a carob tree opened itself and swal- lowed him. Midr. Till. to Ps. CXIX, 131 לתורתך פי פערתי I open my mouth for thy Law; למלקוש . . . שפוערים כשם as people open their mouth for the late rain (to inhale it); a. e. -- 2) to uncover (one's self), esp. to commit a nuisance before the idol Peor. Snh. VII, 6 לבעל עצמו הפוער וכ׳ פעור he who uncovers himself before Baal Peor (is guilty, for) this is the mode of worshipping him. Yalk. Hos. 526 לו עצמך שתפעור אלא . . כלום they ask of thee only that thou uncover thyself before him. Snh. 64a פ׳ בפניו he eased himself before him; a. fr. Pi. פיער same. Sifre Num. 131 פעור לבעל עצמו המפער, v. supra. Ab. Zar. 44b וכ׳ לפניו שמפערין before whom they commit a nuisance every day.
