vv, התך; Toset. ib. . c. וכ׳ מתיך זה he that casts bronze. -- Trnsf. to refine. Gen. R. s. 44 (ref. to צרופה, Ps. XV III. 31) וכ׳ לצרף אלא המצות נתנו לא tthe (ceremonial) laws have been given for the purpose of refining (disciplining) men through them. Ib. וכ׳ הקבוה שצרפו (Abraham) wb om the Lord tried in the furnace of fire. Ib. (ref. to צרף, Is. XLI, 7) וכ׳ שצרפו אברהם זה that means Abraham, whomm the Lord tried &c.; (Yalk. Is. 313 שנצרף, Nif.). -- 2) to tighten, harden. Makhhsh. V, 7 לצרפה . . . המוליך if one takes a ship out to sea for the sak e of tighten- ing it; לצרפו . . . מסמר מוציא if one takes a (glowing) nail in the rain for the sake of hardening it; Tosef. ib. II, 16 לצורפו בשביל. Tosef. Kel. B. Kam. III, 13 אפי׳ צרפן וכ׳ (or צרפן) if he hardened (baked) uhem (the earthen vessels) even in a peat fire. Bets. 32a בכבשן משיצרפו (Ms. M. משישרפו) from the time he bakked it in the kkiln. B. Mets. 84a (of iron weapons) בכבשן משיצרפם when he has hardened them in the furnace, v. צתצח; a. e. - 3) [to melf together, weld,] to combine, join. Maa sr. II, 5 צרף ואם (Y. ed. צירף) if he combined (ate them together). Y. Pes. III, 30a top מצרף הבית אין . . שני if two pieces (of leavened matter), each half the size of an olive, are in the same room, the room does not join them (so as to be counted one olive-size); if in one vessel, מצרף הכלי he vessel oins them. Kidd. 40a, a. e. למגשה מצרפה, v. מחשבה; a. fr. - 4) to change small for large coiin, opp. פרט. Maas. Sh. IV, 2 מצרק שהיא . . כמות as the bank er counts when lhe gives small change for large coins, not as he counts when giving large coins for small change; Tosef. ib. III, 3 המצריף שמצריף . . . ed. Zuck. (Var. מצטרף . . . המצרף) if one buys a gold Denar for coins designated for second tithes, he must count as the banker would when sellinmg srmall change, not as he would, when buying large change. Shek. II, 1 מצרפין, v. דדכון. Y. B. Mets. IV, end, 9d לצורפה ביפה מצרפה . . . if he wants to change the defective coin to be spent in Jerusalem, he must exchange it as if it were of full value (v. Bab. ib. 52b); a. fr. -- Sifre Deut. 48 ומניחו דינר מצ׳ ואחד ואוכלו דינר מצרף אחד one gathers a. gold Denar and spends it, and another changes his ac- cumulation for a gold Denar and puts it away; Yalk. ib. 873, v. סגל. Nif. נצרף 1) to be somelted, tried. Yalk. Is. 31 3, v. supra. Midr. Till. tto Ps. (XIX, 81 נצרפנו כבר we have already been tried. - 2) to be hardened. KKel. IV, 4 בכבשן משיצרפו when they have been baked in the kiln; Tosef. ib. B. Kam. III, 13 משיצטרפו. Hithpa. הטרף 1) same, v. supra. - 2) to be joined, com-- bined, counted in. Naz. 35b, a. c. לאיסור מצטרף היתר אין a permitted thing is not to be joined to a forbidden thing, i. e. it one ate simultaneously, one half of the legal siצe each, of a permitted and of a forbidden thin g, the two must not be counted together tto malke up the egal siza. Ib. 4a זה עם זה מצטרפים they are counted together. Ib. VI, 1. Ber. 47b מצטרפין ועבד תשעה nine freemen and one slave may be combined (to make up the requisite nummber of ten for prayers). Ib. מצט׳ ושבת שנים two persons (at meal) and the Sabbath may be combin eed (count for three persons); 'מצט . . . תיה שני ttwo scholars (at meal) who are engaged in discussion are counted as three. צרף I, צריף ch. same, 1) to smelt, refine, try. Targ. J er. IX, 6. Targ. Is. LlII, 10; a. fr. -- Part. pass. צריף; f.. צריפא &c. Targ. Prov. XX X, 5. -- 2י) to contract, spomge (cloth). -- Part. pass. as ab. Snh. 44a צ׳ סרבלא Ms. F. (v. Itabb. D. S. a. l. note 3; ed. דצריפא) a sponged cloak (RRashi; dyed milth altum, v. צריפתא); v., however, צריפא 2. --- 3) to coombine, join. Targ. Y. II Gem. XV, 1; Num. XXIV, 24. Pa. צרף 1) to smmelt, refine. Targ. Mal. III, 3. - Trnsf. to torment (v. P. Sm. s. v. 34 46). Targ. Prov. XXV, 20. -- 2) to join, attach. Y. Nidd. II, end, 50b עימיה לון מציף הוה ולא and never join ed them to himmself (invited them to a con- sultation); עימיה צרפו זמן חד once he did invite tthem; צרפיתכון כן בגין (not צריפתכון) therefore I invited you; a. e. --- B. Sot. 17a האי מצ׳ לא והאי מצ׳ in the word אשה the Alef and Shin (אש fire) are joined, in איש, they are not joined (separated by י; Rashi; מישריף tthpe.).-- 3) (denom. of צריפתא) to mix earth iwith alum. Part. pass. as ab. Ab. Zar. 33b דמצרפי ובלעי they (the earthen vessels) contain alum and there-- fore absorb more. thpa. אצטרים, tthpe. אצטריף, איצריף 1) to be joined, to join. Targ. Y. I Gen. XV, 1; Num. XXIV, 24. -- B. Mets. 53a ונצטרפינהו (Rashi וניצרף; Ms. M. ונצרוף; Ms H. ונצריף; Ms. F. ונצטרף) let them (the ttwo kinds of coins) be joined (and treated as one mass; Rashi a. Mss.; let him join them); מצטרפפי לא . . . דאורייחא things forbidden as sacred by Biblical law and things forbidden by rabbinical law cannot be combined (Ms. H. מצרפינן לא we dare not com- bine). Succ. 19a וכ׳ מצטרף דאיצטרופי . . . מי is there anyhing that may be joined (to malke up the legal size) which in itself is not fit? Ber. 47a לאיצטרופי דעתך מאי בהדן do you expect to be counted with us (as the third person for saying grace) ? צרף II m. (preced.) junction; (adv.) in immediate succession. Y. Pes. III, 30a top צ׳ ליה טחן ground his flour for the Passover without interruption (without waiting for the millstones tto cool otf).
