קשיא II f. (preced.) difficult, open to objection; un- answeroble ocyection; contradiction. Erub. 13a גופא הא וכ׳ ק׳ 1his in itself is a contradiction; you said, R. l. did not say such a thing, which implies that this opinion is to be rejected, and then you said, this opinion is the adopted rule. Ib. אשימוש שימוש ק׳ there is a contradiction between the two narratives of R. Meir's ministrations; ק׳ אאסרה יהaאס there is a contradiction between the re- lations concerning the teacher who forbade it; שימוש וכ׳ ק׳ לא אשימוש there is no contradiction between the two relations concerning the ministrations, (for I may say.) frst he went &c.; ק׳ ק׳ אאשרה אסרה אלא but between the relations as to who prohibited it, is there not a con- radiction? קשיות f. (preced. wds.) 1) (sub. עורף) stiffneckedness; (sub. לב) hard-hearttedness. Taan. 6a, v. מלקוש. Lam. R. introd. (R. Joh. 1)(play on אאסרו מקשת, Is. XXII, 3) מקשיותם וכ׳ נמסרו for their stubbornness they were given over to the governments. Gen. R. s. 53 (ref. to קשת רבה, Gen. XXI, 20) עמו וקשיותו רבה he (Ishmael) grew, and his stubbornness with him; [anoth. vers.] אמו וקשיותו רבה he grew, and the cause of his renitence was his mother (who encouraged him in his sinful ways); a. e. -- 2) erection, sensual desire. Ib. s. 98 (play on קשתו, Gen. XLIX, 24) וכ׳ שנתקששיתה ק׳ the sensual desire which seized thee when thou wast with thy mistress. קשיותא, קשיו ch.samme, 1) hardness, severity. Targ. Ex. קשיטה f. (b. h.) K'sitah, name of a standard value; a jewel, also a lamb (v. כסיתא). R. Hash. 26a כשהלכתי ק׳ למעה קורין . . . when I was on my way to Africa, (I heard them) call a m'ʿah k'sittah; ק׳ מאה לפרושי דאורייתא it serves to explain the Biblical one liundred k. (Gen. XXXIII, 19). קשישותא f. (preced.) old age, seniority. B. Bath. 142b וכ׳ בק׳ מידי does this depend on age? It depends on reason.
קשישין m. pl. (קשש to be straight, stiff, v. קש) splints put about a fracture. Sabb. 53a השבר גבי שעל ק׳ (Ms. M. כתיתין, q. v.); Tosef.ib IVV), 5 בקשקשין ed. Zuck. (Var. בקשושין); Y. ib. V, 7b, sq. קישושות.
קשיתא f. (קשי) stone of date or olive. Hull. 49a האי וכ׳ דאשתכחא ק׳ (not דאשתכח) a date stone was found in the gall &c. -- Pl. קשיאתא, קששייתא. Ber. 56a thou shalt see in thy dream that the Romans capture thee וטחני וכ׳ ק׳ בך (different in Ms. M.) and make thee grind date stones in a golden mill. Yoma 79b (prov.) וכ׳ דק׳ . . . תרי in two kabs of dates there is one kab of stones and more. Ab. Zar. 28a דזיתי ק׳ olive stones. -- V. קשי.

קשקש I (קשש; cmp, כשכש) 1) to knock, strike, shake, tingle. Sot. 9b (ref. to לפעמו, Jud. XIII, 25) שכינה שהיתה וכ׳ מקשקששת the Divine Presence rang before him as with a bell (v. פעמון); Gen. R. s. 18 לקשקש Rashi, v. נקש. Yalk. Ps. 862, v. קרקשש. Y. Sabb. II, 5a bot. מקשקששת . . . כיון 18o *
