ר׳ למה. . אמת למה ר׳ אם if marked(for future action),why real writing (decree), and if real writing why marked? (Asnsw.) וכ׳ נגזרה שלא עד ר׳׳ marked, before the divine decree was signed; Cant. R. to I, 9; a. e. - Esp. דורשי רשומות those who interpret the Law metaphorically. B. Kam. 82a; Snh. 104b; Ber. 24a Ms. M. (ed. חמורות, v. Rashi a. l.). Pi. רששזם same. - Part. pass. מרושם. Num. דשע (b. h.; cmp. רשה) [to be powerful,] to do violence, be wicked. Yalk. Koh. 976 (ref. to Koh. VII, 17) אם אלא הרבה תרשע אל דשעת (omitted in Sabb. 31b) but it means, if thou hast once done wrong, do not therefore do more רwrong. Hif. הרשיע 1) to declare in the wrong, to condemn. Snh. 10a וכ׳ שנים והרשיעו שנים והצדיקו מעתה אלא if this be so (that you can derive from ושפטום, Deut. XXV, 1, that there must be two judges and one in addition to make a majority vote possible) then and they shall justify' (ib.) indicates ttwo, and they shall condemn' (ib.) means two, hence you would require seven judges for a court -- 2) to charge with wrong-doing, accuse. Ib. שהרשיעו עדים וכ׳ הצצדיק את if (false) witnesses accused an innocent person, and other witnesses came and justified him. B. Kam. 64b (ref. to Ex. XXII, 8) עצמו המרשיע ולא 'יhe whom the judges shall condemn shall pay doubleb, but not he who accuses himself. Ib. (ref. to Ex. ib. 3) פרט וכ׳ למרשיע to the exemption of him who &c.; a. fr. -- 3) to do wrong. Tanh. D'barim 3; Yalk. Deut. 805 (play on רשעתים, Iud. III, 8) רשעיות שתי עלינו הדשיעו הם they (the Arameans) did us ttwo wrongs.

רשע II m., v. רשעא.
דשע m. (b. h.; preced. wds.) wicked man, wrongful claiomant. Snh. 27a (ref. to Ex. XXIII, 1) עד ו׳ תשת אל allow not a wicked man to be witness. Ib. 9b הוא ר׳ וכ אמרה והתורה he is a (self-confessed) wicked man, and the Law says, allow not &c. Ib. ר׳ עצמו משים אדם אין none can incriminate himself (his testimony against him- self has no legal effect). Ib. 27a בעינן דחמם ר׳ (to be disqualified in court) he. must be a wicked man connected with violence (but you cannot disqualify a sinner against ceremonial laws). Gen. R. s. 20 תשובות בעל ר׳ זה נחש that serpent is a wicked creature rich in arguments. Bekh. 8a וכ׳ לא ר׳ ולאותו and to that wicked creature (the serpent) I find no parallel in natture (as to duration of pregnancy). Ab. V, 19 הר׳ בלעם Balaam the wicked; a. v. fr. - Pll. רשעים. Ib. 1וכ׳ מןהר׳ להפרע in order to punish. the wickked who ruin the world &c. Ib. I, 8 יהיו וכשיהיו כר׳ בעיניך when disputants stand before thee (the judge), look upon both parties as wrongful claimants, opp. זכאין. Ib. IV, 15 וכ׳ הר׳ משלות . . . אין it is beyond our power to understand why the wicked are prosperous or why the righteous suffer. Snh. 110b ישראל רשעי בני קטני young children of wicked Israelites; Tosef. ib. XIII, 1 ארן רשעי (corr. acc.). Ib. 2 (ref. to Ps. IX, 18) דשראל ר׳ אלו this refers to Israelitish sinners. Hor. 10b (ref. to Koh. VIII, 14) עוהע של הר׳ כמעשה like that which happens to the wicked in the world to come. Snh. 93a ישראל של רשעיהם the wicked (idolaters) of the Israelitish people; a. v. fr. -- Peom. רשעה. Ber. 61b הר׳ מלכות Ms. M. (v. Rabb. D. S. a. lI. note) the wicked (Roman) government. Ex. רשעה f. (b. h.) same, wickedness, guilt, indictable ofense. Snh. 21a לר׳ חכם אאיש 'a wise man (II Sam. XIII, 3) wise for wickedness. Koh. R. to III, 18 מדת. . . העובר כל וכ׳ דשעתו when one commits a sin shortly before his death, it is as if the measure of his wickedness wanted only this sin, and he completed it; a. fr. --- Pl. (fr. רשעות) דשעיות. Keth. 37a, a. fr. (ref. to Deut. XXV, 2) ר׳ שתי. . אחת רשעה משום thou must punish him for one רwrong, but not for two, i. e. not condemn him to corporal punishment and pecuniary restitution for the same act. 189
