שבועה f. (b. h.; שבע) oath. Shebu. III, וכ׳ שאוכל ש׳ if he says, I swear that I will eat, or, that I shall not eat &c. Ib. 32b וכ׳ למחוייב ש׳ חזרה the oath goes back to (is thrown again on) him who is bound to make it. Ib, וכ׳ ש׳ המחוייב כל whoever would, according to law, be bound to make oath, and is disqualified from doing so, must pay; a. fr. -ביטויי־ שבועת, שוא ש׳, היסת ש׳, הפקדון ש׳ &c., v. ביכוי, שוא, היסת, פקדון, &c. -- הדיינין שבועת the oath imposed by the judges, legal oath. Ib.VI, 1 Y. a. Bab. (Mish. pl.); a. fr. -- Pl. שבועות. Ib. I, 1 ארבע שהן שתים ש׳ the transgressions in cases of oaths are of two classes, sub- divided into four. שבור pr. n. m. Shabor (Sapor I), king of Persia, friend of Samuel. Ber. 56a. -- Trnsf. a surname of fSamuel, and of Rtaba as infuential men. B. Bath. 115b; Pes. 54a שמואל ומנו . . מלכא דש׳ מילתא אמינא Iwill say something which king Shabor could not say; and who is meant by that? Samuel; ib. רבא ומנו; B. Bath. l. c. רבה (Ms. M. רבא); Yalk. שבות f. (שבת) rest, abstention from secular occupa- tion. Sabb. 89a ש׳ צריכים שאתם. . כלום do you (angels) work, that you needed rest? [Sifra Emor ch. XIII, Par. 11, a. e. cש (אלא) שבתון, read; שבות, v. שבת.]-- Esp. sh'buth, an occupation, on the Sabbath and Pestivals, forbidden by the Rabbis as being out ofharmony with the celebration of the day. Bets. V, 2 וכ׳ ש׳ משום עלין שחייבין כל all occupations which are forbidden as sh'buth. .. on the Sab-- bath, are also forbidden on the Holy Days; משום הן ואלו וכ׳ ששש׳ and these are forbidden as sh'buth; you must not climb up a tree &c. Ib. 37a גרידתא ש׳ a plain act forbidden as sh'buth; דרשות ש׳ an act of exercise of authority; שש׳ דמצוה an act of a religious nature. Pes. 65a במקדש ש׳ אין the prohibition of acts as sh'buth does not apply to'emple functions; a. v. fr.

שבותה f. sh'buthah, a substitute for שבועה (v. כינוי). Ned. I, 2; a. e. -- Y. ib. 37a top שמה שביתה ש׳ (not שפותה) gh'buthah may have the meaning of restt (besides a dis- guise for שבועה).
*שבז m. (cmp. בזז, ביזיא) something britlle, rotten. Targ. Is. V, 24 (h. text מק; LXX ys~b~; Pesh. חלא).

שבח (b. h.) [to grow, spread,] to improve, grow in value. B. Bath. 135b וכ׳ ששבחו שבח an improvement which the estate obtained of itself, i. e. a natural increase n value by growth. Ib. 143b נכסים מחמת נכסים שבחו the estate improved through outlays made from the estate; עצמן מחמת . . . שבחו the estate improved owing to their (the heirs') own expense of labor or money; a. e. if. השביח 1) to improve, ameliorate. B. Mets. 14b והשביחה . . . גזל f one took unlawful possession of a field and sold it to another person who made improvements in it. B. Bath. 124b וכ׳ יורשין שהשביחו שבח an improve- ment which the heirs made after their father's death. Ib. IX, 3 לאמצע השביחו, v. אמצע. Ib. לעצמה השביחה the increase of value which she produced goes to her own profit; a. fr. - 2) (neut. verb) to improve, gromw in value. Maas. Sh. II, 1; a. e. - 3) to get bright, v. infra. i. שבח 1) [to amplify,] to praise. Erub. 19a עוד ולא שמשבח אלא and not only (does he submit to God's judg- ment in silence), but he even praises. Succ. 27b, v. עצלן. Sot..VII, 8 חכמים ושבחוהו and the scholars praised him for it. Mekh. Bo, s. 12 וכ׳ ושבהו הודו they offered thanks and praise that the emeny did not see (their dead) &c. Ib..צריךד לשבח must offer praise; a.r. -Part.pass..משובה; f משובחת; pl. משובחין; משובחות a) improved, valuable; b) praise- worthy. Y. Yoma VI, 43a top בגופו משש׳ a sacrifice superior as to its body (stouter), במראיו מש׳ better looking. Cant. R. to I, 1 שבשירים המש׳ the most precious of songs. Num. R. s. 16a (ref. to Num. XIII, 22) מן משובחת שלה שהפסולת המש׳ (not משובח), v. פסולת; a.r. - 2) to guiiet, tame. - Part. pass. as ab. Yalk. Num. 729 מש׳ ומה .. כחו how great is the strength of this lion, and how tame he islb Hitthpa. השתבח 1)to spread, (of light) get bright. Midr. Till. to Ps. XXII והולכת משתבחת היא כך ואחר ed. Bub. (oth. ed. משבחת Hif.) and at last it grows bright and brighter; Cant. R. to VI, 10 מרטבת (corr. acc.). -- 2) to be improved. Gan. R. s. 34 משתבחת היא כותשה שהוא זמן כל the more he beats it (the flax), the better it grows; ib. s. 32; ib. s. 55 והולכת משת׳ Midr. Till. to Ps. XI משבחת והולכת(Hif.; ed.
