שואבה f. (שאב) drawing; הש׳ בית (or sub. בית) the wdll from which the water was draawn for libation on the Succoth festival; הש׳ בית שמחת (or sub. שמחת) the joyous procession to and from the well. Succ. V, 1 (50a) החליל הש׳ בית של (Ms. M. 2 השאובה, throughout the entire chapter, v. Rabb. D. S. a.l. note 1) themusical performances at the ceremony of the drawlng ofwater. Ib..(51a) כל.,שמחת וכ׳ הש׳ בית he that has not witnessed the rejoicing at the ceremony &c., has never seen rejoicing. Y. ib. V, beg. 55a וכ׳ ש׳ בית שמה נקרא למח why was it called (the rejoicing of) the place of drawing? שוב I (b. h.) to go back, come back. Sot. 10b עובר כל וששב every passer-by (in going or coming back). Gen. R. s. 48, a. fr. והששעים העוברים the travellers. Lev. R. s. 23 עליו נפשו ושבת (not עליה) and his soul came back (was restored) to him, ie..he was reconciled; a.fr. -Esp..o return (o God); to repent. B. Bath. 110a (play on שבאל I Chr. XXVI, 24) לבו בכל לאל ששב he returned to God with all his heart. Hor. 2a (ref. to Lev. IV, 22, sq.) ששב לא . . השב וכ׳ he who repents when he finds out (his wrong) brings a sacrifice for his error; if he does not repent, he is not permitted to sacrifice. Ab. שובך (b. h.) pr. n. m. Shobach, an Ammonite general. Sot. VIII, 1 ש׳ של . . בני the Ammonites went into battle relying on the strength of Sh. Ib. 42b שופך וכתיב ש׳ כתיב the name is once written Shobach (II Sam. X, 16), and once Shophach (I Chr. XIX, 16); כשובך עשוי . . אמר חד onne authority says, his real name was Shophach, and he was called Shobach, because he was built like a dove- cote (of high stature, v. next w.), v. פךkש.
שובך m. (שבך; cmp. שבכה) net-work, esp. (b. h. ארבה) dove-cote. Ex. R. s. t40 (play on שובל, I Chr. IV, 1, sq.) לאלהים שובך שהעמיד ושובל (not ושובך) Bezalel was sur- named Shobal because he erected a dove-cote for God, כש׳ עומד שהיה המשכן זה that is the Tabernacle, which. stood (high) like a dove-cote. Ib. כש׳ . . . העמיד the Lord had theabernacle put up like a dove-cote (for the dove Israel). B. Bath. II, 5 וכ׳ הש׳ מן... מרחיקין you must keep your ladder (when lopping trees &c.) four cubits away from your neighborr's dove-cote.
