שוטים, שוטין m. pl. snpposed to be the name of a plant, fenugreek. Shebi. IX, 1; Suucc. 39b (השיט׳), vv., however, ירבוז.
שוטיתא f. (v. שוט II) 1) staf. Targ. I Sam. XIV, 27 (A.r. שושיא); 43. Targ. Jud. VI, 21 (Ar. שוטיא; some ed. שולטיתא). -2)branch,twig. Keth.7a וכ׳ שוטיתיה ליה אאהנייא the myrtle branch (with which he used to dance before bridal couples) was in the old man's favor (that a phe- nomenon occurred at his funeral), but some said שטותיה his folly (v. שבשתא); others said שיטתיה, v. יטתא. Sabb. 77׳b שטותא ש׳ the myrtle branch used at wweddings is called shoitha as being sh'utha (folly).

*שוטף m. (שטף) washed. - Pl. שוטפין Targ. Is. LIX, 3 (ed. Lag. ששות׳, corr. acc.; h. text נגאלו; cmp. געל).
שוטר m. (b. h.; v. שטר) [recorder, notary,] executive officer, overseer. Tanh. Shofa'tim 2 שש׳ אין אם . . כיון וכ׳ ממנו שיוציא wwhen a person has been declared in court bound to pay to his neighbor; unless there is an executor to collect from him, the judge has no power &c. Ex. R. s. 1 ישראל ש׳ אצל מצרי נוגש הלך an Egyptian task- masterr came to the house of an Israelitish overseer. Deut. R. s. 5 לה יש ש׳ ולא שופט ולא and it (the ant) has neither judge nor officer; a. fr. -- Pl. שוטרים. Ex. R. l. c, v. נגש. Tanh. l. c. (ref. to Deut. XVI, 18) אלו ש׳ . .. ששופטים וכ׳ פרנסים shof'ṭim are the judges, sho'rim, the managers that lead the community; a. fr.
שוי, שוה (b. h.) [to join, combine,] 1) to be even, egual, alike. M. Kat. 9b (ref. to Prov. III, 15) הא... חפצך כל בה ישוו שמים חפצי all thy affairs are not of equal value with her (the Torah), but heaven's affairs (pious deeds) are of equal value with her (you may interrupt study for pious works); בה ישוו לא שמים חפצי. . וכתיב but it is also written (ib. VIII, 11), 'and all afairs &c' (which implies that) even heaven's affairs are not equal to her . Y. Peah I, 15d hot. בה ישוו לא וחפצי חפציך I sent thee something with which thy afairs and my affairs cannot compare; a. e. - Denom. שוה, q. v. -- 2) (denom. of פוה) a) to be of value. Meg. 15b (ret. to Esth. V, 15) כל. . מלמד לי שוה איננו זה this indicates that all that wicked man's treasures were engraven (registered) in the tablet on his heart, but when he saw Mordecai, he said, all this is of no value to me. -- b) to value, weigh, consider. Ib. 16a (ref. to Esth. VII, 4) וכ׳ בנזק שוה אינו זה צר this enemy has no consideration for the king's loss &c. Hif. השוה 1) to lace side by side. Y. Ber. I, 2c top רגליו את להשוות צריך.. זה he that stands up to pray must set his feet together. - 2)to make even, smooth,level. Tosef. B. Kam. XI, 14 וכ׳ לקשוותו עתיד אם if the hatcheller has to make the web even (cut away the protruding threads), he may take even a handbreadth (they belong to him); וכ׳ לאורכו משויהו he must shear it lengthwise, but not widthwise; B. Kam. 119b. Erub. 93a פצימיה ה׳ if he made the posts even, i e. made walls to connect them in one line. Succ. 19a קירויו את כשה׳ wwhen he made its ceiling even, i.. e. extended it in a horizontal direction over the wwhole building; a. e. -- 3) to compare, make alike, place on a levd standard. B. Bath. VIII, 5 חבכור את להן וה׳ and made the first-born alike with them, i. e. assigned to him an equal share with his brothers. Nidd. 46b הכתוב ה׳ וכ׳ כגדול הקטן the Scriptural text places the minor on a. level with the adult as regards the laws of &c. Y. Kidd.
