שושתרי pr. n. pl. Shusht're (prob. modern Shuster), in the Babylonian empire (v. Neub. Geogr. p. 382). Snh. 4a תרי חד על לש׳ מטו כי Ar. (ed. תרי לשוש, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 200) when the Jewish exiles came to Sh., tthey said, for one (good land) we have found two'; v. שוש.
שותא I f. (= שועתא; cmp. טונא = טוענא; שעי) talk. Kidd 70b וכ׳ דמר ש׳ השתא now I do not understand your talk at all. Meg. 14b, v. פלכא. B. Bath. 39a לכו תיפוק לא ש׳ let no talk come from you, do not talk about it; לא ש׳ מפקינן we shall not talk about it. Succ. 56b, v. ינוקא I; a. e.
שותא II f. (=שוחתא; שחת; Assyr. sutu, Del. Assyr. Handw., p. 64 8) [destruction,]] shutha, a severe south wind; [Ar.; eat windl. Sabb. 32a דש׳ ביומא on a day when the shutha blew. Yeb. 72a וכ׳ דש׳ ויימא דעיבא יומא on a cloudy day and on a shutha day we do not perform circumcision &c.
שותא I (o שותא) f. (=שוחתא, v. שוו I; v. Low Pf., p. 264) sproutings of the caper-tree. Ber. 36a צלף דש׳ אדעתא people will plant a caper-tree for the sake of the sproutings.
שותא II (or שותא) f. (= שוחתא; cmp. שוח) trap made of frame work or a block. B. Kam. 117a ש׳ ההוא וכ׳ דהוו two men had a dispute about a trap (and the animals caught in it). Sabb. 124b וכ׳ ש׳ ליה אייתו bring a trap for Kahana to sit on; וכ׳ ש׳ שקולו להו אמר הכי thus he said to tthem, remove the trrap to mmake room for Kahana.
שותי m. (שתה I; cmp. b. h. שתי) [drinkableness,] body of wine, strength. Y. Ter. XI, 47, sq. (expl.ממעיטוו, Mish. 1) משויו ממעטהו he lessens its body (by boiling), contrad. to ממידתו its quantity; ib. II, end, 41a; Y. Ab. Zar.II, 41a top.
שותף m. (= משותף; שתף) associate, partner. Tosef. Snh. VIII, 7 וכ׳ עמו היה ש׳ . . אדם Adam was the last created, in order that the heretics might not say, he was God's associate in his work; Snh. 38a. Y. B. Bath. III, 14a bot. ברשות כנוטע . .. ששש׳ if a partner goes in and plants (a. portion of the ground), he is considered as one who plants with the owwner's assent, i. e. he cannot claim the culti- vated portion as his exclusive property on the ground of undisturbed possession; Bab. ib. 42b. Ib. חזקה לו אין ש׳ (not שותפות) a partner cannot claim possession (v. חזקה). Y. Snh. I, 19b top כליסטים ליסטים ש׳ a robber's partner is considered a robber; a. fr. -- Pl. שותפים, שותפין. B. Bath. שותפות f. (preced.) partnership, association. Yeb. 101 וכ׳ ש׳ בה שאין . . נאמר cursing is mentioned with reference to those below (parents, Ex. XXI, 17), and with reference to Him above (Lev. XXI V, 15); as there is no associatjon above, so must there bs no association below (i. e. the curse to be punishable must refer to each singly). Snh. 63b וכ׳ ש׳ שיעשה לאדם אסור one must not form a. partnership with an idolater, lest he may have to swear, and he would swear by his idol &c.; Bekh. 2b. Pes. 112a (in Chald. dict.) בהדיה ש׳ למיעבד to go into partnership with him (on whom 'the hour smiles). Erub. 71b שלקחו בש׳. . when they bought a cask of wine in partnership.
