מששתן הריאה. לחמה כבד the liver is the organ of anger, the gall, of jealousy, the lungs gladden them again; a. eh.
שוש שוש pr. n. pl. Shush or Shvash (prob. the modern Sus s Shushan, v. Sm. Gr. a. Rom. Geogr. s... Susa). Snh. 94a לארעין שויא אמרי שוש מטי כי Rashi (ed. ארעין כי) when they (the Jewish exiles) came to Sh., they said, this is as good as our land. Ib. תרי שוש, v. שושתדי.
שושא m., pl. שושי licorice-wood (v. Low Pf. p. 378). Succ. 12b.
שושבין m. (=שבשבין; שבב, cmp. שיבבא, P. Sm. 4341) friend, esp. the bridegroom's friend or best man who offers gifts and is entitled to reciprocation; also the brids's friend or agent. Snh. III, 5 שושבינו זה אוהב by friend' (as disqualified for witness) one's best man is meant. B. Bath. 144b עמו ואשמח שושביני לי תנו לימא he may say, get me my best man (in whose name the gitts were sent at my wedding), that I may rejoice with him (but since he is dead, Iam under no obligation to reciprocate). Tanh. Korah 8 וכ׳ מלך של בתו לש׳ this is to be compared to the case of the agent of the king's daughter (who had to guard her interest at the consummation of the mar- riage, v. infra), who kept the testimonials of her virginity in his charge; Num. R.s. 18a; a.fr. -[Yalk. Vum.729 שושבינ, read; שושטו, v. שושטה.]-- Pl. שושבינין. Tosef. Keth. I, 4 וכ׳ משל אחד ש׳ שני מעמידין היו ביהודה in Judaea they used to put up two groomsmen (as guards), one appointed by the groom's, and one by the bride's family; Y. ib. I, 25a; Bab. ib. 12a; a. e.
שושבינא, שו׳ ch. same, also (the kings) friend, counsellor (cmp. Assyr. susabinu, Del. Assyr. Handw., p. 506). Targ. I Kings IV, 5 (h. רעה). Targ. Jud. XIV, 20. Targ. II Sam. XV, 37; a. fr. -Yeb. 63a, v. ירגא -- Pl. שושביני. Targ. Y. Deut. XXXII, 50.
שושבינות f. (preced.) groomsmanship; wedding giftts. B. Bath. IX, 4 (144bז חזרה . . . ש׳ מקצתן שעשו האחים וכ׳ ש׳ (Mish. ed. שושבנות) if a part of the brothers have served as somebody's groomsmen in their father's life- time (the gifts having been furnished by the father), the gifts returned (on the occasion of s wedding in their family) go into the common fund of the estate; שהש׳ בבוד נגבית for the reciprocation of wedding gifts can be Ieegally enforced. Ib. 144b ש׳ אביו לו שלח if tthe father sent the gitts for him (his son, specifying him as the donor); סתם ש׳ אביו שלח if the father sent the gifts without specifying the donor. Ib. ש׳ לאביו נשתלחה if the gifts (in the son's behalf) were sent in the father's name;
שושבינותא ch. same. B. Bath. 145b הוה דש׳ כללא וכ׳ the general rule about groomsmanship is; if he (who is bound to reciprocate) lives in the same town, he might have come (to the wedding uninvited, and his recipro- cation is legally due).
שושבינתא f. (preced. wds.) connected by grooms- manship in the families, kinswomman, intimmate friend. Kidd. 81a וכ׳ הואי שושבינתיה (Rashi שושבנתיה) she was his kinswoman, and therefore was intimate with him.

שושטה m. (reduplic. of שוט) rod-holder, keeper of a vivarium. Lev. R. s. 5 וכ׳ דוב של לש׳ משל this is like the case of the keeper of a bear that ate the bear's rations (v. סדור); Yalk. ib. 469 שושנה (corr. acc.). Yalk. Num. 729 שושטו (not שושבינו) his (the lion's) keeper.
שושיבא m. (cmp. next w.) a species of locusts with long heads. Ab. Zar. 37a (expl. קמצא אייל).

שושיפא, שוושפא m. (= שפשיפ׳, v. שפשף; cmp. ׳gdקos)a coarse cloak, uused also asa bed-sheet. TTarg.III Kings II, 8 (h. text אדרת). Targ. I Sam. XXI, 10 (h. text שמלה). Targ. Deut. XXII, 17. Targ. O. שושן (b. h.) pr. n. pl. Shushan, Zusa, the capital of the Persian empire; הבירה ש׳ the Castle of S. Midd. I, 3 צורה הב׳ ש׳ עליו המורחי שער the eastern gate of the Temple mount on which the picture of the Castle of S. was sculptured. Kel. XVII, 9 הב׳ בש׳ אמות שתי two standard cubit measures were deposited in the gate called the Castle of S.; Men. 98a; Bekh. 39b sq.; Pes. 86a. Meg. 2b וכ׳ מוקפת שש׳ מה as S. was known to be a fortifed city since the days of Ahasverus &c. Ib. וכ׳ ש׳ בין לחלק to make a distinction between S. and other towns; a. fr.

שושנה f. (b. h.; = שנשנ׳, fr. שן, cmp. סנסן) flower, esp. fily. Cant. R. to II, 2; Lev. R. s. 23, v. ורד I. Cant. R. to II, 1, v. חבצלת. Ib. שושגת . . . כש׳ שבמינים המשובח העמקים (the righteous are compared to) the most precious of the various kinds (of flowers), to the lily, and to the finest of that species which is the ily of the valley.
