שחם, שחים ch. same, to be hot, dark, black. Targ. Job XXX, 30 (h. text שחר). -- Part. pass. שחים (v. שחום); pl. שחימין, שחימי. Targ. Y. Gen.II, . Targ. Job VI, 16 (h. text ו(הקדרים - B. Kam. 96b חדתי ועבדינהו ש (Ms. M. שחמי) if the coinswere black(tarnished), and he(who stole them) made the m look new again; ש׳ ועבדינהו חדתי if they were new, and he made them black. Ab. Zar. 33b ש׳ חצבי הני וכ the jugs of gentiles made of dark clay. Hull. 55b שחי׳ משיכלי Ms. M. (Ar. שחמי, ed. שיחומי) dark-glazed basins, opp. חיורי (opin. quoted in Rashi; bronge basins).
שחמא, שי׳ m. (preced.) 1) (adi.) dark, black. - Pl. שחמי, שי׳, v. preced. -- 2) (noun) blackness, black spot; tarnish. B. Kam. 49a לולד ש׳ ביה דסליק היכי כל whenever he struck her so that the black mark (bruise) could be communicated to the embryo (excluding a blow on her hand or foot); Yalk. Ex. 335. B. Kam. 96b ידיע מידע שיחמייהו(Ms. H.שחמיהוו) (when he makes the coins which he blackened look new again,) their tarnish remains no- ticeable.
שחמתית f. (preced. wds.) reddish, dark-colored wheat. B. Bath. V, 6 ש׳ . . . לבנה ונמצאת ש if he sold wheat as dark-colored, and it is found to be white, as white, and it is found to be dark. Y. Naz. V, 54a, v. אגרו. Y. Maas. Sh. IV, beg. 54d top שמתית; Y. Ter. II, 41a top שמת׳; Y. Peah II, 17a שמותית.
שחן (cmp. שחם) to be hot, parched. Part. pass. שחון, f שחונה (sub. ארן) parched, scabby soil. Y. Yoma V, 42c top; Bab. ib. 53b, a. e., v. גשום. Hif. השחין to heat. B. Kam. 82a וכ׳ ומשחין משביע it (garlic) satisfies, heats (the body) &c.
שחן, שחין ch. same (answering to h. חם, חמם) 1) to be warm. Targ. Is. XLIV, 15, sq. Targ. Koh. IV, 11. Targ. Job XXXVII, 17 Ms. (ed. משחנין, Pa.; ed. Wil. משחנין, corr. acc.). - 2) to heat, lightt a fire. Arakh. 31b קדים אנא וכ׳ נורא שחין I lighted a fire (moved into my house) be- fore thee. -- 3) (with על) to hatch, v. infra. Pa. שחן 1) to heat. Keth. 10b; Gitt. 70a משחנן, v. בעk. Y. Sabb. I, end, 4b ומשחנתיה מיחזרתיה מהו is it permitted to put it back (into the oven) and keep it warm? Lev. R. s. 25 להון ומשחבא. .. היא she (the mother hen) gathers them, and puts them under her wings, and keeps them warm. -- 2) to hatch, sit over. Targ. Jer. XVII, 11 (ed. Wil. משחין,rread; משחין). Targ. שחנא, שי׳ m. (preced.) 1) - h. שחין. Targ. O. Ex. IX, 9, sq. (bO. ed. Berl. a. Y. שחין). Ib. 11. Targ. O. Deut. XXVIII, 7 (Y.II שוחנא; Y. Iשיחנ pl.). Targ. Prov.XX, 30 (ed. Lag. a. oth. שוחני). -- Pl. שחני, שי׳, שוח׳, v. supra. - 2) (v. כתיתא, כתישא) the scab on the caomte's back from the friction and pressure of the load; trnsf. heavy load. Gen. שחף (v. חפף II) to rub, scrape, peel. - Part. pass. שחוף a) one whose genitals are wasted (v. מחוי). Tosef. Bekh. V, 4 (expl. אשך מרוח, for which Bekh. VII, 5 שנמרחו אשכיו, v. מרח). Sot. 26b. Esth. R. to II, 3. -- bb)(cmp. חסיך) reduced, lean, losing flesh. Sifra B'huck., Par. 2, ch. IV (ref. to שחפת, Lev. XXVI, 16) וכ׳ ש׳ שהוא עתים או or at. times one becomes reduced in fesh, but feels comfort- able &c.; Yalk. Lev. 673 נשחוף (corr. acc.). -- Yalk..Gen. 145 שחופים, v. סכף. --- יe) f שחופה; pl. שחופות of indistinct color, gray (wool), opp. לבנות. Hull. XI, 2 (1135a; ib. 136b (Ms. R. 2 סחופות; Ms. R. 1, a. Ar. טחופות, v. טחף). Nif. נשחף to become reduced. Sifra l. c. (ref. to שהפת, v. supra) נ׳ שהוא . . . אדם לך יש (not יש וכי) sometimes a. person is sick in bed, yet his fesh is preserved; there- fore the text says, and consumption', which means tthat. he is wasting away; Yalk. Lev. l. c.
שחף I ch., Pa. שחף same, to scrape, dredge, clean. M. Kat. 4b נהרא לשחופי (Ms. M. לסחופי) to dredge a canal.
שחף II (preced.) [to scrape, sweep,] to move, crawl. Targ. Koh. I, 5 (of the sun, cmp. נסר; h. text שאף). Targ. Y. Gen. III, 14 שחיף Ar. (ed. מטייל). Targ. Y. II Lev. XI, 42. - [Nidd. 26a משחיף Ar., v. שלחף]
שחפא I, שחפא m..ש׳ צפר (=b. h. שהף, שחף I) name of an unclean bird, supposed to be sea---mew. Targ. Lev. XI, 16; Targ. Deut. XIV, 15.
שחפא II m. (שהף I) rubbish. - Pl. שחפי. Sabb. 110a דקניא ש׳ Ms. O. a. Ar. (ed. only ש׳) refuse of reeds.

שחפת f. (b. h.; שחף) wasting away, consumption. Sifra B'hhuck. Par. 2, ch. IV, a. e., v. שחף.
שחפתא ch. same. Targ. O. Lev. XXVI, 16 (ed. Vien. שחפ׳; Y. שחיפותא); Targ. O. Deut. XXVIII, 22(Y. שחפותא).
שחץ (v. חצץ II) 1) to divide, tear. Ab. dR. N., 2ad vers, ch. XLIII (ed. Schechter, p. 122) בפיו ןaשוח שהוא ןrשח the lion is called shahats, because he tears with his mouth; Yalk. Prov. 959 בשיניו משחן שהוא (Pi.). - 2) to divide of, separate. - Part. pass. שהוין; pl. שחועים, שחועין a) separate, proud, aristocratic. Y. Sabb. VI, 8a top מותר ש׳. . . והאיש but a man is allowed (to wear those ornaments which a. woman is forbidden to wear on the Sabbath), because he is not ostentatious (and will not take them off to show them), v. שחצנית. Cant. R. to IV, 8 (ref. to אריות ib.) מה וכ׳ וגבורים ש׳ . . ש׳ הזה הארי (strike out וגבורים) as the lion is proud (keeping for himself), so were Sihon and Og proud (selfish) . . they did not come to each other's rescue; Yalk. ib. 988 שחק הזה הארי מה (corr. acc.). -- b) [that which is to be kept of, cmp. רחק, ] obscene.
