שטים, שיט׳ (b. h.) pr. n. Shittim, a ravine opposite Jericho. Snh. 106a (ref. to Num. XXV, 1) שמה ש׳ the name of the place was Sh., v. שטות. Gen. R. s. 18 (ref. to Mal. II, 13 שנית) לש׳ שניה the second time (you did this) since the events at Shittim (Num. l. c.). Tanh. T'rum. 9 בשטים ונתרפאו בש׳ ולקו בש׳ חטאו they sinned at Sh. (Num. l. c.), they were smitten at Sh. (ib. 9), and were healed through shittim (acacias, of the Tabernacle); a. e.

שטיפה f. (שטף) rinsing with cold water for the puri- fication of certain vessels (Lev. VI, 21). Sifra Tsav, Par. 3, ch. VII; Zeb. XI, 7; Tosef. ib. X, 13, sq., v. מדיקה; a. fr.
שטם (b. h; cmp. טמם) to lie in wait for; to bear a grtdge againtd, persecute. Gen. R. s. 67, v. ססנטר. Y. Ab. Zar. I, 39c (expl. וישמם, Gen. XXVII, 41) סמונה לשנאה hidden hatred. Pesik. R. s. 13 . . . והיו יישטמוהו . . יוסף וכ׳ ששוטמם his brothers sinned against Joseph, 'and they persecuted him (GGen. XLIX, 23), and his brothers thought that he would persecute them as they did him; עשו אבל וכ׳ ליעקב כששטמו but when Esau persecuted Jacob &c.; a.e. Nif. נשטם to be hated, persecuted. Num. שטןm. (b.h.; preced.) hostilebeing, hinderer, disturber; accuser, Satan. Sifre Deut. 218 (ref. to Deut. XXI, 10 sq., a. 18 sq.) וכ׳ ביתו לתוך ש׳ והכניס . . זה של אביו this man's father loved a fair captive, and brought the dis- turber into his house, and his son became rebellious. Y. Sabb. V, 5b top, v. קטרג. Ber. 19a, a. e. פיו אדם יפתח אל לש׳ man must not open his mouth for Satan, i. e. invite mistortune by ominous words.
