Hif. השטיף same. Taan. 6a הזרעים את ושטיף (Ms. M. ששוטף, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note) it (the heavy rain) washes the seeds away; Yalk. Joel 535 ומשטף (Pi.). -- Part. pass. מושטף; pl. מושטפים carried of, floating. Ex.R. . c. שראו לפי המים פני על מ׳ . .. because they saw the bodies .. foating on the water. Nif. נשטף, Hithpa. השתטם, Nithpa. נשתשף 1) to be mwashed, shoiwered upon; to take a shower bath. Sabb. 40a וכ׳ ומשתטף ויוצא and goes out (of the steam-room), and takes a shower bath in the outer room. IbbV שלא ובלבד וכ׳ ישוף but he must not have a cold shower bath and. then warm himself &c. Tosef. ib. III (IVV), 4; a. fr. -- 2) to be swept away, drowned. Sifre DDeut. 307 שכשטפו. .. ראו מה במים why were the men of the food drowned in water?; Yalk. ib. 942 שישטפו; Sifre . c. וכ׳ באש להשתטף . . . מה wwhy were the men of Sodom . . . swept away by fire and sulphur?; Yalk. l. c. להשטף; a. e. -- Trnsf. to be carried aiday by passion. Num. R.s. 9d; Sifre Num. 12 קידמוך הרבה ונשטפו many women before thee have been carried away (into infidelity).
שטף, שטיף ch. same, 1) to wash, rinse. Targ. I Kings XXII, 38. Targ. II Sam. XI, 8; a. e. -- Tam. 27b ואחית שטוף ושתי שטוף rinse (the cup) and drink, rinse, and set it down; a. e. -- 2) to overfoaw, flood, mash aiwa. Targ. Ps. LXXVIII, 20 מיא ישטפון Ms. (omitted in ed.). Targ. Is. XXXIII, 21. Targ. Y. II Num. XXI, 16. Targ. Ps. CXXIV, 4; a. e. - Naz. 32b וכ׳ רבנן שטפוהו the Rabbis carried R. El. away, at),tגede him stand on their prin- ciple, i. e. made him give up his opinion and adopt theirs. Succ. 53a וכ׳ למשטפא, v. קפי; a. e. Pa. שטף to wash. Y. Ber. VIII, 12a bot. ידוי משטף ולא וכ׳ and did not wash his hands up to the joints.
שט m. (b. h.; preced. 1)flood, shower. Y. Shek. I, 46a, v. ששטף. Gen. R. s. 73 גשמים של ש׳ a flood caused by rains (brought the rams from Laban's fold to Jacob's); Yalk. ib. 130; a. e. -- Trnsf. passion, anger. Lev. R. s. 24, beg. בדינו ש׳ שיש. .. נותן שהוא בזמן when he orders execution (punishment), none praise himm, for they know that there is passion in his judgment; Yalk. Ps. 843; Y. Ber.IX,14b. -- 2) washing, rinsing; ש׳ כלי a vessel which requires only rinsing in order to be restored to Levitical cleanness. Hull. 25a; Zeb. 3b; a. e. - 3) wool that is gained by washing. Sifre Deut. 166 (ref. to Deut. XVIII, 4) ראשית ולא גז ראשית הש׳ the first of the wool that is cut, but not the first of the wool that comes out by washing. --4) עזים של ש׳ goat- skin made hairless by washing. Cant. R. to IV, 11; Gen. R. s. 65; Yalk. ib. 115 וכ׳ מהש׳ . . לך אין there is no smell more ofensive than that of washed goat-skins. - 5) hair that is fallen out, bald pate. Koh. R. to I, 8 (in enigmatic speech) מאלל שיטפי (not שיטפו) my hair is going.
שטפא, שי׳ ch. same, 1) food, shower. Targ. Job XXXVIII, 2b. - 2) rapidity, (cmp. ששגר) rapid review in recalling a tradition. Sabb. 130b רהיט שיטפך אגב דילמא וכ׳ perhaps in the rapidity of reviewing, the tradition came back to thy mind; וכ׳ רהיטא ש׳ אגב אין (Ms. M. שיטפאי, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note) yes, my tradition was recalled by the (mmy) rapid review; Nidd. 53b שטפך אגב לד אתיא; לי אתיא שטפאי אגב. -- 3) rush of people. Y. Sabb, XIX, beg. 16d וכ׳ עבר ש׳ תחמון כד when you see the crowd pass by, bring them (the keys) by way of the row (the lines of men forming a partition for Sabbath purposes). --) [sweeping aaway, cmp. נסח, נסע,] discarding from the mind, forgetfulness. Gen. R. s. 81, v. עקקת; Yalk. ib. 135 שטופא; Tanh. Vayishl. 8 שמטי. -- 5) (v. preced. 5) hair. Lev. R.s. 15 (ref. to Job XXXVIII, 25) . . . אתרין אית שי׳ there are places where they call the hair shifa; Yalk. ib. 554 שיטפה.

שטר ch. (preced.) to draw, spread, strike (butter, salve &c.). Targ. Is. XXXVIII, 21 וישטרון ed. Vien. (ed. Lag. וישיטרון; ed. Wil. וישורטון), v. שטה. -Gitt.69b ונשטרינהו בכמכא and let him strike kaomakh (v. כמך) over it;(Rashiנ let him soak it in k.). Ib. בדובשא ונשטרינהו and strike honey over it. Pes. 44a וכ׳ קשטר משטר אי if he spreads it (on bread) and eats it (Rashi; if he dips bread into it); Naz. 36b. B. Mets. 85b משטר לך אשטר I will smear thee a salve (over thy eyes).
שטר m. (v. שוטר) executive office, execution. Yalk. Deut. 907 וכ׳ יואב של שטרו אלמלא but for the executive office of Joab, David could not have executed justice; Yalk. Sam. 147 שוטרו (read; שיטרו); Tanh. Shofr'tim 2 סיטנו; ed. Bub. 3 שיטנו (corr. acc.).
שטר, שטר m. (v. שטר) writ, document. Kidd, I, 1 a woman may be acquired as wife וכ׳ בש׳ בכסף by handing her money (or money's worth), by a writ (handing her a paper on which is written, thou art betrothed unto me') &c.
