שכונא m. (שכן) 1) dwelling, tent; apartment. - Pl. שכונין, שכוניא, שכוני. Targ. Jud. VIII, 11; Targ. Jer. II, 2; IX, 25; XXV, 24. - B. Bath. 29b; 159b הואי גוואי בשש׳ אאנא I lived in the interior departments (and had the right to pass the premises which you occupied; therefore you cannot claim undisputed possession). --2) group of build. ings, neighborhood. - Pt. as ab. שכונה f. (preced.) 1) settlement, colony, group of dwellings. Ab. Zar. 21a ש׳ יעשנה שלא ובלבד provided that (in sellipg dwellings to a gentile) he does not make it a. (gentile) settlement; ib. וכ׳ ש׳ אין a settlement consists of no less than three men (living in a group). Gitt. 6a לש׳ מש׳ when the deed of divorce is carried from one group of buildings to another; Y. ib. I, 43a top. Gen. R. s. 39 שכונתך זו וממולדתך and out of thy moledelh' (Gen. XII, 1) this means, thy settlement. Ib. s. 64, v. ציב; a. e. - Lev. R. s. 2 שכונתי some ed., v. שכדנה. - 2) the neighbor's privilege of preemption. B. R. s. 17 וכ׳ יוסי דר׳ שכונתיה the quarter in which R. J. the Galilean lived; Lev. R. s. 34ובשכונתיה שכוניא בכל אזלא הוות וכ׳ she went begging in all quarters, but in R. Jose 's quarter she did not go; Yalk. Is. 352 דקרתא שכוני בכל וכ׳ ובשכוניה; Y. Keth. XI, 34b bot.. דמשבקי שכונה the quarter in which my former husband lives. -- Pl. שכונתא.
