שמעתא, שמעתתא f. (v. שמועה) report, tradition, traditional law; outcome of a discussion, decision. Targ. I Chr. XI, 11 (ed. Rahmer שמעת, corr. acc.). Ib. Sabb. 110b וכ׳ אaע של ש׳ בו יש אפי׳ even if there be somme idolatry in him, he will be forgiven. - 2) (cmp. מום) bleomish, suspiicion. Kidd. 71b וכ׳ פסול ש׳ . . ראית אם when thou seest two meh quarrel with each other, there is some blemish of descent in one of them, and heaven does not allow them to become attached to each other. Pes, 3b פסול ש׳ בו ומצאו and they found in him a blemish of descent, contrad. to שחן (v. שהן I); Meg. 25b (Treat. Sof'rim ch. IX, 11 ממזד ונמצא); a. e.
שמצא, שימ׳ch. same, slight suspicion ofidolatrous manipulation of wine (v. נסו). Ab. Zar. 31b משום חמרא וכ׳ ש׳ wine (he refused to drink) because of a suspicion, but why did he refuse beer דש׳ ש׳ משום because of a. suspicion of a suspicion (it might be suspected to be wine). -- V. next w.

שמר (b. h.) [to be still,] to watch, guard, wait; to observe; to keep. Snh. 63b וכ׳ לי שמור . . לא one should not say to his neighbor, wait for me at such and such an idolatrous statue (or temple). B. Mets. 58a . . . השוכר וכ׳ את לשמור if one hires a workingman to guard a cow, a child &c. Sabb. 118b וכ׳ ישראל שמרו אלמלי if Israel had observed the first Sabbath &c.; a v. fr. -- Part. pass. שמור; f שמורה &c. Ib. XXII, 4 ש׳ שיהא בשביל . . נותנין you mmay put a dish into the well that it be kept (cool); a. e. Pi. שמר 1) same.
