תרס (denom. of תריס), Hif. התריס 1) to shield, protect. Y. Sabb. V, 7b bot. (expl. לבובין) כנגד מתריס והוא . . . נותן חיה one places a hide from the tannery against its heart, and this protects it against attacks of wild beasts. -- 2) to resist, fight, wrestle in debatte. Yeb. 121b שמנים עם שה׳ וכ׳ (ed. שהתירם, corr. acc.) who debated with eighty-five elders; Y. ib. XVI, 15d וכ׳ כנגד מתריסין שהיו who debated with R. H.

תרע (denom. of תרועה), Hif. התריע to sound alarm, esp. to blow the Shofar at public services (at fast and prayer meetings &c.). Y. Taan. II, 65b top שאין שנה כל בסופה לה שמתריעין . . . מתריעין if people neglect tto blow the Shofar at the beginning of the year, they will sound it at the enid, v. רוע I Taan. III, 1 ששנו צמחים מיד עליהם מתריעין when plants change (degenerate), we blow (call prayer meetings) for them at once (without waiting for the first rain). Ib. 3 ומתרעת מתענה העיר אותה ומתריעות . that town must fast and blow the Shofar (at prayer meeting), and all those around must fast, but not hold prayer meetings; מתענות ולא מתריעות must hold prayer meetings, but not fast.
