A Study of Peter Chelčický's Life and a Translation from Czech of Part I of His Net of Faith (1947)/A Key to Pronunciation of Czech Letters
A KEY TO PRONUNCIATION OF CZECH LETTERS
Because my old Czech typewriter suffered from a chronic indisposition I was obliged to transliterate certain Czech diacritical marks as was best possible. Below are listed, in parallel columns, the letters in correct Czech form, then the form used in this work, and finally the English pronunciation.
LETTERS | PRONUNCIATION
In Czech | In ThisThesis | |
chc | chc | pronounced as tz in "tzar." Rokycana is therefore pronounced as "Ro-key-tza-na." |
chč | chc̄ | as ch in "church." |
ch | ch | as ch in German "auch" or Scotch "Loch Lomon." Thus, Chelc̄icky̍ is read as "Chel-chit-skey." |
chš | chs̄ | as sh in "ship."S̄ti̍tny̍, |
chž | chz̄ | as z in "azure"; "Z̄iz̄ka." |
chě | che | as ye in "yet." George of Podēbrady. |
chř | chr̄ | as rsch in "far shot." Pr̄i̍bram. |
Accents on the vowels indicate length.
i,í,y,ý | i,i̍,y,y̍ | are all pronounced as "ee" or "ey" of varying lengths. |
