Back, Sir George, R.N., F.R.S., created D.C.L. 28 June, 1854; the arctic navigator, served in two expeditions under Franklin, and commanded two himself, discovered the Great Fish River, knighted 18 March, 1839, vice-president Geographical Society, admiral 1857, F.R.S.; born at Stockport, 6 Nov., 1796; died 23 June, 1878; married 13 Oct., 1846, Theodosia Elizabeth, relict of Anthony Hammond, Esq., of London.
