Butler, Joseph, s. Thomas, of Wantage, Berks, gent. Durham, 1722, and of Stanhope ('the golden rectory'), 1725-40, preb. of Rochester 1736-40, and clerk of the closet to Queen Caroline 1736-7, bishop of Bristol 1738-50, dean of St. Paul's 1740-50, clerk of the closet to George II. 1746, bishop of Durham 1750, until his death 16 June, 1752.
