Butler, Joseph, s. Thomas, of Wantage, Berks, gent. Oriel Coll., matric. 17 March, 1714-5. aged 17; B.A. 1718, B.C.L. 1721, D.C.L. 1733, author of the 'Analogy,' preacher at the Rolls Chapel 1719-26, preb. of Salisbury 1721-38, rector of Haughton-le-Skerne, co. Durham, 1722, and of Stanhope ('the golden rectory'), 1725-40, preb. of Rochester 1736-40, and clerk of the closet to Queen Caroline 1736-7, bishop of Bristol 1738-50, dean of St. Paul's 1740-50, clerk of the closet to George II. 1746, bishop of Durham 1750, until his death 16 June, 1752.
