Lincoln Coll., matric. 30 May, 1754, aged 17, exhibitioner 1754, B.A. 1758; fellow University Coll. & M.A. 1761, B.C.L. 1765, a bencher of the Middle Temple, Verian professor common law 1762-77, principal New Inn Hall 1766-1803, a judge in Bengal 1773-89, knighted by patent 14 June, 1777, chief justice Benares 1789-99, declined a peerage, president of the Asiatic Society 1797, died 9 May, 1803, buried in the Temple Church.
