Franklin, Captain Sir John, Knt., F.R.S., created D.C.L. 1 July, 1829, the Arctic explorer, entered the navy 1800, served at Copenhagen and at Trafalgar, was at the attack on New Orleans 1814, conducted the overland expedition to explore the north coast of America in 1819 and 1825, and knighted, governor of Van Dieman's Land for 7 years. In 1845 he sailed on a voyage of discovery of the North-west Passage, and died 11 June, 1847; brother of Sir Willingham Franklin named below.
