Dumfries), F.R.S., scholar Trinity Coll., Cambridge, 1852-5, and Wrangler and B.A. 1854, fellow 1853-8, M.A. 1857, hon. fellow 1872-9, professor natural philosophy Marischall College, Aberdeen, 1855, professor natural philosophy and astronomy King's College, London, 1859-71, and hon. fellow 1865-79, professor of experimental physics in Cambridge University 1871-9, president Cambridge Philosophical Society, and Rede lecturer 1878, died 5 Nov., 1879.
