Tynemouth 1865-68, Hawick (or border burghs) 1868-86, Glasgow (Bridgetown division) since Aug., 1887, a lord of the Admiralty 1869-70, secretary to the Admiralty 1880-2, chief secretary for Ireland 1882-4, chancellor of Duchy of Lancaster 1884-5, secretary for Scotland and vice-president Scottish Education Department Feb. to April, 1886, the biographer of Fox and Macaulay.
