Wheatstone, Sir Charles, F.R.S., created D.C.L. 2 July, 1862 (s. W. Wheatstone, of Gloucester), inventor of the electric telegraph, of the stereoscope, and of the spectroscope, professor of experimental philosophy, King's College, 1834, F.R.S. 1836, royal medal 1840, Copley medal 1843, created LL.D. Cambridge 1864, knighted at Osborne 30 Jan., 1868, died in Paris 19 Oct., 1875, aged 73.
