Schildpatt, n., ‘tortoise-shell,’ ModHG. only, from LG. and Du. schildpad, ‘tortoise’ and ‘tortoise-shell.’ The early history of Du. padde, ‘toad,’ E. puddock and OIc. padda, ‘toad,’ is obscure.
