BERGIN, Darby, Canadian physician, b. in Toronto, 7 Sept., 1830. He was graduated in medicine at McGill college in 1847. He entered the volunteer military service as captain of a company raised by him during the "Trent" difficulty in 1861 ; became a major in 1866, and promoted in 1869 to be lieutenant-colonel of the 59th Stormount and Glengarry battalion. He was appointed surgeon-general of the Dominion troops during the Riel rebellion of 1885. He entered parliament as a conservative in 1872, and was returned for the same constituency (Cornwall) in 1878. In 1881 he was elected president of the medical council of Ontario, and in 1885 president of the college of physicians and surgeons of Ontario.
