Sylvester II
(?–1003)

born Gerbert d'Aurillac; French scholar and teacher of Arab/Greco-Roman arithmetic, mathematics, and astronomy. Pope from 999 until his death in 1003, Sylvester II was accused of sorcery and making pacts with Satan; largely believed to have been rumors based on the fact he had spent his youth studying in Muslim Andalusia
