Pedanius Dioscorides
"ancient Greek physician, pharmacologist and botanist, famous for having written the five volume De Materia Medica, a precursor to all modern pharmacopeias and one of the most influential herbal books in history."
Pedanius Dioscorides

De Materia Medica has been published in two different English translations:

  • Around 1665, John Goodyer translated it into English, but this was not published. In 1933, Robert Theodore Gunther published a lightly edited version under the title The Greek Herbal of Dioscorides. Goodyer's original translation is certainly in the public domain. For countries with "life plus 70 years" copyright duration, Gunther's edited version will enter the public domain in 2010.
  • In 2005, a new translation by Lily Beck was published under the title De Materia Medica by Pedanius Dioscorides; this translation is subject to copyright.

Works by this author published before January 1, 1926 are in the public domain worldwide because the author died at least 100 years ago. Translations or editions published later may be copyrighted. Posthumous works may be copyrighted based on how long they have been published in certain countries and areas.
