Thomas Bowdler
(1754–1825)

English physician and philanthropist, best known for publishing The Family Shakespeare, an expurgated edition of William Shakespeare's works, intended to be more appropriate for 19th century women and children than the original. He is the eponym of the verb "bowdlerise", now largely pejorative, meaning "To remove or alter those parts of a text considered offensive, vulgar, or otherwise unseemly".
