California and Oregon pioneer. Returned to Indiana from a 1843 trip to the west with Overton Johnson and wrote of their travels, with a focus on Marcus Whitman.

Note: According to a 1932 review of a Princeton University Press edition, material published in that later edition included further chapters, notably concerning Marcus Whitman's trial by local Indians, prior to the Whitman Massacre.
