American writer; While a student at the Stevens Institute of Technology (Class of 1878), Baird sought a larger fraternity with which to merge his own, Alpha Chi Sigma. His efforts were stymied by the lack of reference sources on American fraternities, and so he researched and published his own, first published in 1879 and subsequently known as Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities
