J.Y.=James Yate?

I would like to have more connecting this fellow with Hawaii. Britannica lists the author as "J. Y. Johnson". James Yate Johnson's life dates fit, and his interest seems reasonable. The most direct connection I can come up with is a page in the The Annals and Magazine of Natural History:
