Sōliyan.-— Sōliyan or Sōliya is a territorial name, meaning an inhabitant of the Chōla country, recorded as a sub-division of Karnam, Idaiyan, Pallan, and Vellāla. The equivalent Sōangal occurs as an exogamous sept of Vallamban, and Sōliya illam (Malayālam, house) as an exogamous sept of Panikkans In the Tamil country. Some Pallis style themselves Sōlakanar (descendants of Chōla kings), or Sōlakula Kshatriya. (See Sōzhia.)
