BALTIMORE BIRD, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, BALTIMORE HANG-NEST, or BALTIMORE, a bird of the family sturnidæ (starlings), and the sub-family oriolinæ (orioles). It is the oriolus baltimore of Catesby, now icterus baltimorii. The name Baltimore was applied, because its colors, black and orange, were the same as those on the coat of arms or livery of the Lord Baltimore who was formerly proprietor of Maryland.
