First Amendment

The First Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka transferred jurisdiction conferred on the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court. The amendment came into effect on 20 November 1978.

Section 1 Short title

1. This Act may be cited as the First Amendment to the Constitution.

Section 2 Amendment of Article 140 of the Constitution

2. Article 140 of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is hereby amended by the insertion immediately at the end of that Article of the following proviso:- " Provided that parliament may by law provide that in any such category of eases as may be specified in such law, the jurisdiction conferred on the Court of Appeal by the preceding provisions of this Article shall be exercised by the Supreme Court and not by the Court of Appeal.".

Section 3 Date of operation on this Act

3. The provisions of this Act shall be deemed to have come into operation on September 7, 1978.
