Destroyers and Other Verses/When Each Morning I Awaken

When each morning I awaken,
Conscience cries, "Go not again";
Every night I boldly answer,
'Tis to ease a heart in pain.

"Little fool, he cannot want thee"—
That may be, but still I'll go;
For a lark is gaily singing
In my heart once dumb with woe.
